#1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER โข Incomparable storyteller Danielle Steel illuminates rarely glimpsed precincts of unimaginable wealth and power, where love and freedom are the most dangerous desires of all. Natasha Leonovaโs beauty saved her life. Discovered starving on a freezing Moscow street by a Russian billionaire, she has lived for seven years under his protection, immersed in rarefied luxury, while he pursues his activities in a dark world that she guesses at but never sees. Her home is the world, often on one of Vladimir Stanislasโs spectacular yachts manned by scores of heavily armed crew members. Natashaโs job is to keep Vladimir happy, ask no questions, and be discreet. She knows her place, and the rules. She feels fortunate to be spoiled and protected, and is careful not to dwell on Vladimirโs ruthlessness or the deadly circles he moves in. She experiences only his kindness and generosity and believes he will always keep her safe. She is unfailingly loyal to him in exchange. Theo Luca is the son of a brilliant, world famous, and difficult artist, Lorenzo Luca, who left his wife and son with a fortune in artwork they refuse to sell. Lorenzoโs widow, Maylis, has transformed their home in St. Paul de Vence into a celebrated restaurant decorated with her late husbandโs paintings, and treats it as a museum. There, on a warm June evening, Theo first encounters Natasha, the most exquisite woman he has ever seen. And there, Vladimir lays eyes on Lucaโs artwork. Two dangerous obsessions begin. Theo, a gifted artist in his own right, finds himself feverishly painting Natashaโs image for weeks after their first meeting. Vladimir, enraged that Lorenzoโs works are not for sale, is determined to secure a painting at any price. And Natasha, who knows that she cannot afford to make even one false move, nevertheless begins to think of a world of freedom she can never experience as Vladimirโs mistress. She cannot risk her safety for another man, or even a conversation with him, as Theo longs for a woman he can never have. From Moscow to the Riviera, London, and Paris, The Mistress is a riveting tale of vast fortune, cruelty, creative genius, and daring courage, as uncompromising individuals chart a course for collision. Enjoyable
I picked the book based on not knowing anything about Russians but curious about rich Russians in the news the last couple years. The book was truly interesting and filled my head with thoughts of how the rich lived. The book revolves around rich Russians, the art world and actually 2 mistresses. A mistress of the Russian and a mistress of an famous painter, mother of his son and later his wife. It was fun reading. I loved the plot and storyline. It took me awhile to connect with the characters. They remained characters in my head and did not feel real. But I loved the connection of the 2 women being mistresses in different settings, but still similar.

Not one of Danielle Steels best reads but good.
It was a good read and informative but I didnโt get lost the book like I do in her better novels. This wonโt deter me from reading Ms Steel โs next book. Every reader is different and Iโm sure many readers will delight in this novel.

Many years ago, as I recovered from surgery in a Houston hospital, I asked my husband to bring me Danielle Steel's "Palomino," to read during my recovery. After puzzling over numerous books on the shelf about raising horses, he finally asked a knowledgeable clerk and found the fiction novel by my newly- discovered favorite author. It's been quite some time since I've had the luxury of getting lost in a Danielle Steel novel, but browsing the shelves in an airport news store recently reminded me of the pleasure of curling up with a cup of tea and a work of Steel. This time, it was by electronic means, an Amazon Kindle, and the choice was, "The Mistress: A Novel. " Steel's detail to research on her topic is impeccable, and her devotion to each character, compelling. I had trouble putting the book down, felt like I was losing old friends when I finished, and can't wait to start the next one. Lastly, one of Steel's major talents is her ability to take a romantic novel, give it the exquisite quality of mature passion, and not resort to steamy scenes of raw sex.

The story of the Mistress
I disliked the slow beginning. Eventually it got better but it took some time. I couldn't recommend this. My rating was more for the second half then the slow beginning.

Great for light reading
I love Danielle Steele's books. They are always well written, and you can identify with her characters. "The Mistress" was one of her lighter books, with beautifully drawn backgrounds for her characters. You could almost feel yourself in Paris shopping for beautiful antiques or in the haute couture fashion houses like Dior. Then whisked away to the South of France on a huge yacht or to a spectacular restaurant filled with one of a kind art. Underlying it all was a beautiful love story built from a fantasy. I loved every minute of the book and was sorry when I finished it.
