Most famous for scripting the adventures of Marjorie Henderson Buell's Little Lulu , John Stanley is one of comics' secret geniuses. He provided a visual rough draft for all the comics he wrote and then handed off these "scripts" for someone else to render the finished art. No matter what comic he was writing, he breathed life into his characters. In Stanley's comics, Nancy is no longer a crabby cipher but a hilarious, brilliant, scheming, duplicitous, honest, and loyal little kid-a real little kid. Her adventures with her best friend, the comically destitute Sluggo, involve moneymaking schemes to afford ice-cream sodas, botched trips to the corner store for Nancy's Aunt Fritzi, and comically raucous attempts to remove loose teeth. Drawn & Quarterly is launching several kid-friendly volumes of Nancy and Nancy and Sluggo as companion volumes to Melvin Monster and Dark Horse's Little Lulu volumes. John Stanley was Brilliant!
John Stanley was a national treasure. His work was a large part of my childhood. I sought out his work with the same enthusiasm as I did for artist/writer creators like Carl Barks, Jack Kirby, and Steve Ditko. Stanley was amazing and really knew how to make kids laugh, no matter which of the many characters he was writing and illustrating. He remains a treasure to me, and these volumes of his work are a must-have for people who enjoy such magic.

Not every reader of Nancy is aware that Ryder and Artist, John Stanley, who wrote all of the little Lulu Comics throughout the 50s and into the 60s, also wrote in Drew some if not all of the Nancy comic books. In fact, his writing in the Nancy comic books is almost on a par with his work on little Lulu, the only difference being that the little Lulu characters are so much better and less limited than the ones in Nancy Comics. Stanley was a master.

There were some negative reviews because the pages weren't 'white'. Didn't bother me. They went for a "vintage patina". Good comics.

Delightfully funny Nancy comic books from the 1950s
A really nice, hardcover collection of Nancy comic books from 1957-58. I was a little surprised by how well these comics still hold up today. Most of them are pretty funny, and sometimes I even laughed out loud. It’s really a delight to get to read these! Unlike the newspaper strip, these comics have a chance to stretch out a bit (though I think all the stories are still less than ten pages long) and develop some, I think, new characters, like Oona Goosepimple and Bill Bungle/Bumble, though the comics are still centered around Nancy and/or her pal Sluggo. The artwork seems scanned from the original, aged, pamphlet comics and doesn’t seem to have been cleaned up much or at all. Some pages looks a little dark, but are still perfectly readable. I guess overall I do like the way they’ve pretty much reproduced the pages close in feel to how they would look if you’ve picked up an original today, though printed on much higher quality paper and in a durable, hardcover format.

Makes me happy!
I love having the four volumes of Nancy comics. It was part of my childhood and it just delights me to read them! Oona Goosepimple influenced my life!

My wife's childhood favorite. I got 5 stars for the book as a Christmas present. Now she has other Nancy books on her list....

Quality of book
I love this book! I bought it for my middle-aged daughter Nancy because it reminds me of her as a child.
