Ranger Compass

Proper compass, slightly pro features including rubberised ring. I didn’t trust the lanyard that was included as light plastic clip to fix it together, instead used paracord. Overall fairly priced solid bit of kit.

Bought a cheap compass from here. Couldn't get a consistent reading from it. Bought the £30 version of this one from the main competitor - it's needle would barely turn and again gave inconsistent readings. Gave in and tried for a third time with this one - it works perfectly. Smooth, fluid rotation and, therefore, consistent readings. Why is it so hard for us to make something so simple? Anyway buy this one - it works.

Excellent compass

This compass performs its primary purpose, the needle points to magnetic north. I have confirmed this by comparing to other digital and magnetic compasses. The base plate of this compass is simple, flat, clear plastic. Each edge has a clearly marked ruled scale along it. Additionally, there is a magnifying lens which is a bit crude but does the job if needed. The bezel rotates with just the right reassuring resistance so it is easy to set when required, but doesn’t cause concern that it will unintentionally move. The degree markings on the dial are clear, as is the declination scale and orienting lines. The lanyard has both 1:25k and 1:50k scales on it, however it feels a little flimsy. I think I might replace it with something a little more robust. As it is made of acrylic there are some concerns regarding long term durability, however, so far it is working well. That is the compromise for buying a cheaper product.

Don't bother with slightly cheaper alternatives, get this proper brand.

A long time ago, long before iphones and the cloud, I spent a month in Japan for my work. I was not accompanied so I had to find my own way around. A predecessor to this was without doubt the most useful device I took with me. When you can't read the signs it's always useful to know where north is. A friend is heading off to the far east to explore. Nowadays one has great maps, directions etc etc on one's phone - provided they work when needed. So I got this wee compass for him as a partial back up. This compass seems sturdy and accurate, and small enough to stick in a pocket. With luck, at least he won't head off in the wrong direction if his phone doesn't work - I hope !

The compass came as expected in good time and good packaging. It was easy to assemble and looks lovely. The glowing face (at night time) and rubber ring for turning make it easier, especially if it is wet. Really looking forward to making use of this.

This compass is calibrated to the Northern Hemisphere, where it probably works fabulously, but it doesn't work in Australia. Unfortunately there were no listed details to mention this in the listing, and when shopping on Amazon Australia, one would assume it's Southern Hemisphere calibrated. If you're looking for a compass that is calibrated to the Southern Hemisphere, look for the one with MS in the title.

I like Silva products and was looking for this model compass for some time. I like the scale on the lanyard and the guides on the compass itself. Unfortunately, after sitting in my closet for several months a big air bubble has formed. I can't seem to get rid of it. As far as I can tell there is no leak as the liquid is still there. The compass still works, but you have to be careful not to let the bubble affect the movement of the needle.

A good standard Swedish compass :)
