Nice green cover that grows in the shade or partial shade
Sprouts after a heavy rain during January- Feb in the SF bay area. As far as I know this is a west coast native plant. I do not find invasive and not very tall - most are around 6 inches tall and depends on the rain. It reseeds itself but one year did not return so I ordered more. If it reseeds in an area I do no want, easily removed, not like weeds you can't get rid of. I understand this plant also goes by the name miners lettuce as it is supposed to be edible. It does not taste bad but I rarely eat it.

Good germination rate!
Claytonia (miner's lettuce) has become my favorite cool-weather salad green to grow. I first planted some in my raised beds 4 years ago, and since then, it has kept self-seeding and proliferating without much effort on my part. Claytonia does very well in cool-weather climates, as it doesn't mind the chill, and its seeds even benefit from it. Last year, I had to top my raised beds with new soil, and my old Claytonia seed volunteers got buried deep. I ordered this packet to add some fresh seeds to the soil level. I had a pretty good germination rate on these, but I also had a lot of Claytonia volunteers growing everywhere around the freshly planted rows. Last year's buried self-seeding seeds still grew through all the thick layers of soil.

They Grew!
I'm not sure if I got as many seeds as they claim (I'm not going to sit and count them, and they are SUPER small, so I can't say for sure), but sure enough within 7 - 10 days I had sprouts and now I have a luscious patch of Miner's Lettuce (minus the bits the neighborhood ground squirrels have been eating!) I'm not sure if it's objectively the best deal around, but it's a good price and the seeds work, so I think it's worth it.

Seeds are good. They sprouted.
They spouted! That's all I really needed them to do.

Fun to grow, look great, taste great!
Update: I wrote previously that I was skeptical about there really being 10,000 in the small packet. Another order just arrived and I’d like to withdrawal that statement because while I can’t count the seeds I think it’s entirely possible given how small they are. These only just arrived, so while I grew miner’s lettuce this last year, I can’t yet speak to how these seeds will perform. That said, I wanted to say that while I’m certainly not counting 10K seeds, I can imagine that there really are that many. See photo. They’re tiny! (The lettuce in the photos of the salad was not grown from this seller.) Regarding the germination rate, the listing notes that you’ll get perhaps 1 plant per 20 seeds sown. (The package itself says, “Sowing rate: 15 - 20 seeds per plant.”) I think with seeds this small that’s what you have to expect. This last spring I collected leaves for more than 30 large salads, but I also let many flower heads mature so I could collect the seeds. It’s tricky though, they can rot if you keep them too enclosed while drying, but when the capsules dry they shoot the seed many feet, up to at least 6’! I collected thousands (and found many between sofa cushions, etc.), but I’m glad to have these to augment what I’ve got. BTW, I think the taste is better than any commercially sourced lettuce I’ve had!

Claytonia is a perfect product
This claytonia perfoliata (aka Miner's or Indian lettuce) popped out of the ground almost faster than I could plant them. Since they grow wild here, they should do well. Only problem was my eyes are not so good and seeds are so small, that I planted too many too close together and every one germinated. I recommend these seeds to anyone who is interested.
