Beautiful edition makes this story come alive.
Quite frankly, this series was always something of a slog to get through. I went crazy and splurged for the Omnibus despite that, and I'm really pleased. With the new color process and oversized reproductions, artwork that was once over-dense now comes alive! There's just so much going on in this story--so many characters, so much plot, it always felt cramped. The average image of the Hulk, for example, was 2cm high. That didn't exactly let you feel the power of these gigantic super-battles. Combine that with the washed out and ridiculous dot-matrix coloring and that put the kibosh on most of the enjoyment to be had. With this edition, all that has changed. The oversize format lets the illustrations breathe. The intense, full color scheme brings everything to life. The story was always overblown and ridiculous, but with these beautiful illustrations given their due, it becomes an innocent pleasure to see: the Enchantress from Thor fight the Lizard from Amazing Spider-Man! Among other wacky delights...

Zeck's artwork shines, but you have to slog through Shooter's dialogue and the Layton issues
This omni has long been out of print but I bit the bullet and recently splurged for it on the the big auction site. I was a teen when this hit in '84 and dutifully bought 6 or so copies of each issue at my local comic shop contributing no doubt to its claim as the best selling series of its prior 25 years. This was hyped to the sky. The story, a conceit of Mattel action figures tie-ins was dramatically epic in its scope but ugh, the dialogue and execution at times. Art by Mike Zeck of Punisher fame was impressive, and this omni has a collection of his un-inked pencils at the back which are just great. Marvel had no lack of bad to mediocre artists back in the 80s and unfortunately we get a bland one w/ Bob Layton's work in 3 of the 12 issues (However the worst would arrive in the next round as Al Milgrom butchered Secret Wars II, gack!). At any rate, the goodies battle the baddies for the Beyonder's amusement while Galactus impassively stands around trying to figure how to short circuit the game and Doom steals the show literally and figuratively. We also get to see Spidey meet his symbiote, laugh, there was another 6 issues purchased for issue 252. Having just read Hickman's Avengers omnibuses including Infinity and his Secret Wars it's pretty jarring revisiting Shooter's version. Hickman's modern telling is light years ahead in plot and presentation and makes this version look like it was from a grade schooler. The physical presentation of the book itself is a nice step up from the trade paperbacks, decently glossy colorized omnibus treatment. Maybe it'll see a reprint one of these days, as this is still a whale and will cost a pretty penny on the open market. Recommended for a nice nostalgia trip if you can make it. (j4.)

awesome series
I first read secret wars when i was about 12 or 13, I'm 37 now, and it's still a great read, and above all, it's fun. It's a real heavy book due to it's volume of pages. I took off the dustjacket, because i did not want it to get ruined. It still looks great as an all black book with the silver embossed title on the cover. i collect most of my comics this way now. either trade paperbacks or hardcover. If you like Secret Wars, then you may also like another one of my favorite comic books called Chill: Book One. It can be ordered by going to [...]

Sweet collection
High quality bound edition. Nice extras on the toy line too. Not in the league with Silver Age classics but fun and you can't go wrong with Dr. Doom!

Five Stars
May be the best Marvel plotline of the 80's all in one compendium.

The original marvel cross over!
Have wanted this collection for a while. The original secret wars was the the comic series that got me into comics as a child and reading this was definitely a trip down memory lane. It definitely has that 80s comic book feel from a time before multiverse crossovers and reboots. Will be interesting to see what the MCU adapts in their secret wars movie.

Omnibus in name only or "An Oversized HC by Any Other Name..."
I'd preordered this book in March of 2022 and it arrived within a couple of days of its release in January 2023. I don't know what I was expecting, I mean the story is only 12 issues long, but I was shocked at how thin this volume is. It's about the size of most oversized hardcovers offered by Marvel or the deluxe editions by DC. I know a massive $500 mammoth collection was offered a few years back that had everything ever compiled on Secret Wars and Secret Wars II, but it wouldn't have hurt Marvel to put some extras in this volume as well. I've always wanted a hardcover version of this story as it is one of my favourites growing up, but I guess I was hoping for more. I haven't read it yet, I just wanted to let people know that this isn't so much an omnibus as it is just a hardcover collection of the main story with a couple of What if...?!, She-Hulk and Thor crossover issues thrown in. Even with the addition of those it still feels very anorexic. I would have liked to have had some behind the scenes features, maybe some sketches and alternate covers. Oh well, I got it on sale so I guess I can't really complain. It arrived quickly and in great shape except for a hole in the plastic wrap on the front cover that was done at the printer. Storywise, I can't recommend Secret Wars enough, as far as omnibus' go...not sure I'd recommend at all.
