The Walking Dead Compendium Vol. 1

I came into the Walking Dead craze a little late, the first series of the TV show had already been aired and it wasn't long before the second series was about to start. Luckily my girlfriend wanted the series 1 box set for her birthday and convinced me to watch it with her, hence the fandom began.I bought this compendium during the mid season break of series 2 and I was initially hesitant to start reading it because it might ruin the surprise of what happens in the series. For those of you with similar concerns, you don't need to worry about this. The book and series have the same characters (with some noticeable differences/absences) and while the plots are very similar, there are significant differences that means reading the book won't ruin the series. An example of this without giving too much away is that Shane died very early in the book but has only just been killed in the series.Now, onto the actual book:The artwork is very good; it is all in black and white and I originally thought this would bother me but after a while you don't even notice.The story itself is told very well, by that I mean there is some nice character development and the dialogue does not seem cheesy or out of place. There is plenty of action but also lots of quieter moments where you learn more about the characters so it's not just zombie killing the whole way through (although there is plenty of that of course).The story is a lot deeper than you would first expect, it really looks at how people would react and change due to a zombie apocalypse, raising questions like "what would you be willing to do to survive?".There is a lot of scope in this book, it covers what looks like the first three series of the TV show (as mentioned, with significant differences using the same locations/characters). Due to this it is huge and is great value for money just because of the amount of content.It may just be because the TV show moves quite slowly plot-wise and things are drawn out for TV but at times the book seemed to move very quickly, seeming to pass over what were major plot points in the series quite quickly. This wouldn't be an issue if you haven't seen the TV series though and it doesn't detract from the quality of the story.The series was based on the comics which were obviously written first so it lets you pick up on little things having read the book when watching the series that others wouldn't. For example, two things in the last episode of the second series made me excited for series 3, I'll leave you to determine which two things they were!I'm not really sure what else I can say about it besides from if you like the series or even if you haven't seen it and just like the whole zombie apocalypse thang then buy this book, you will not be disappointed. Hopefully the second compendium will come out soon!

Took my time with this one, the story is great, but has some very dark bits here & there, some funny bits too. Andrea was a bit of a pain in the arse on the tv series, but she's one of my favourites in these comics. 10/10 highly recommend if you're a fan of the show.

As someone who previously watched the show, it cannot compare to the immaculate writing and world building of this comic. 8 volumes of pure genius by writer Robert Kirkman showing a community of survivors tackling the undead apocalypse 10/10

It has been ages since a TV show grabbed my attention. I burned through the first season and waited for the second, completely oblivious to the fact that it was based on a comic book still running strong till a friend told me. I hesitated ordering it till the finale of Season three of the TV series thinking that the book would spoil it for me but I did and to my shock, the book is different when it comes to the storyline. True, the characters are the same and some of the settings (like the prison and the farm - these two are in the book as well) but what they go through in the books are different from what they suffer in the series. For those out there thinking the books or the TV series would spoil the other, you are wrong. At the time of writing this, the two are not completely related except the characters.With that out of the way, the book does a splendid job of juggling between zombies chomping and human brutality in a world where the living come back from the dead. Different characters have different back-stories that just doesn't make them extras in a book but a person you 'may' relate to.One thing I may add here which I don't think a lot of reviews have touched here. The storyline is not for the weak of heart. There are underlying tones of suicide, torture, rape and many other crude stuff. This is certainly not the kind of book you would buy for your 13 year old nephew or grandson. Characters change and develop when they go through such horrors and how they overcome (or don't) is something that makes this book unique.As for the compendium itself, its a collection of first 49 issues of the comic series still running strong. Its an excellent value for money. The book itself is split in chapters (not issues) so you won't be disturbed with pages that say 'End of issue One' that goes up to 49. Its a neatly compiled book gives you necessary breaks between chapters for you to catch your breath. On the service side, the condition of the book was neat, clean and the delivery was fast.Overall, an excellent book for adults that is excellent value for money, considering you are not paying for 49 comic issues but one. Recommended for all mature comic book readers out there.

My son absolutely loved The Walking Dead Compendium! He couldn’t put it down and finished it faster than expected. The story is thrilling, emotional, and packed with suspense. The characters are incredibly well-developed, and the artwork adds a powerful punch to every scene. It’s not just about zombies – it’s about survival, humanity, and the tough choices people make in desperate times. He’s already asking for the next volume. Highly recommended for mature teens and fans of graphic novels and post-apocalyptic stories!

At first, the comic is super fast-paced (maybe too much), and then it slows down a little once, I assume, Kirkman decides he wants this to go on for the long run. It started off as a regular zombie comic book series, but once you're really into it, you see it for what it is. This isn't about walkers, this is about people.Aside from some issues being a little lengthy with not much going on (which is inevitable in realistic circumstances), the storylines, characters, and most importantly the villains, are amazing! It's so worth it to go through an issue which is a little slow to reach an awesome action-packed one. Although I initially really loved the first artist of TWD, I've grown to love Charlie Adlard's art too; the first artist drew comical expressions a lot which was a little unfitting in some issues, but nevertheless there are pros and cons to both.Physicality-wise about this compendium: this is a heck of a heavy book. Since it's not hardback I worry about damaging it, but at least the spine doesn't bend when you've got it open on a flat surface. The thing that I would have most liked to see would've been the covers of each issue, because they are so so good, and because they're in colour unlike the b+w series, but the compendium doesn't contain them. I've just bought the book which contains the first 50 covers and goes into detail with the process of each one to rectify this. I'm not sure if each volume contains the issue covers, but if they do, after this conpendium I will likely be buying the series by volume, since I can't find the second volume of the covers edition anywhere online to go hand in hand with compendium 2. God, buying the entire series whether it be by compendium, book, volume or issue ends up being expensive no matter how you look at it. I've read them all up to date, but I want to collect the series for a reread. At least I got this compendium when the price was down to £15. Great bargain!

This is the definitive and best way to reading the Walking Dead comics, as it contains comics #1-48 of the series. The book contains over 1000 pages of pure zombie awesomeness. I don't really read comics, but I am a fan of the Walking Dead TV show so I was intrigued by the source material that was inspired from it. For TV fans of the show, this would be the best way to get in to the comics, as it contains nearly half of the volumes that has been currently published so far (Kirkman has no plans to end the comics series in the near future) and so it represents excellent value for money (you can get this for under £30 - buying each individual volume would be way over double this price). Of course, if you're looking for something more portable (yes, this graphic novel is HUGE, amazingly huge) then it would make sense to maybe buy some parts in volumes. But you can't beat the value of this.The comic itself is even better than I imagined. While it is in black and white, the drawings are very detailed and the black and white style adds much more to the feel of the story IMO. It's got such an addictive plot too, I haven't read much of it so far, but from what I've read it is somewhat similar to the TV plot, and it's great. You could race through this it's that good.Anyone could appreciate this - fans of the TV show, comic book fans, zombie fans, horror fans. It's totally accessible and SO worth the money! Brilliant comic series!Don't hesitate in buying this! You won't regret it!

I actually made the decision to buy this Compendium after playing Telltale's Walking Dead Video Game. While the game was a very moving experience (and there are a few character linkages between the two), the comic book series is where the game's roots are from. My expectations were quite high because of how much I was moved by the game. When this comic book compendium arrived, it met my high expectations on all levels!Without giving away the story too much it follows the protagonist, Rick Grimes, a police officer. However there are points in the comic book where side character developments are explored in more detail. The reader gets to view how this new and disturbing world transforms people, no matter what their background. I found that the story was very gripping and that it was difficult to put down without wanting to turn over and read the next event that unfurled.The detailed black and white illustrations arguably aid the reader to feel a sense of hopelessness that is brought by the zombie apocalypse. The dialogue is excellently written, and there are certain times when things are left to interpretation especially after horrific events have occurred. Because time is often difficult to pinpoint (as it would be in a zombie apocalypse...) the reader is left to interpret what certain characters are going through at certain points. All this is combined with a few plot twists here and there which further grips the reader.This was my first purchase of a comic book compendium and with over 1000 pages, the compendium certainly is value for money. I would particularly recommend it to people that like post-apocalyptic fiction or survival horror.

The series is phenomenal, with fantastic artwork and a storyline that goes far beyond the initial zombie outbreak, exploring in depth what happens to humanity afterward. Once reunited, he faces not only the constant threat of the undead but also the simmering tensions within their small camp outside of Atlanta. As someone who’s not deeply familiar with comics, I was blown away by how gripping this volume is. It hooks you from the very first pages, and it’s nearly impossible to put down. I especially loved Kirkman’s note at the start, where he explains that his goal was to explore how people change in extreme situations. That theme is already clear, even in these early issues.The black-and-white artwork is exceptional. It captures the grotesque horror of the zombies, the brutality of survival, and the emotional intensity of the characters. Some panels are so cinematic that they were replicated almost frame-for-frame in the TV show.Vol. 2: Miles Behind Us Issues 7-12An intense and gripping volume! Rick, his family, and the rest of the group decide to move on from the camp outside Atlanta. Along the way, they gain some new companions and lose others. In this installment, they encounter a couple of “too good to be true” housing situations and are pushed to their mental limits.Vol. 3: Safety Behind Bars Issues 13-18Another gripping installment. After leaving the farm, the group discovers a prison that offers a temporary sanctuary. The gates provide some reprieve from the zombies outside, but the group soon learns there may be even worse monsters within. This volume is especially gruesome and brutal, with difficult decisions to be made and harsh forms of “justice” and punishment handed down. Everyone is pushed to their limits.Vol. 4: The Heart's Desire Issues 19-24Tensions run high as the prisoners and the original group clash right from the start. Even when things begin to settle, new problems arise, especially within the group’s romantic relationships. This story arc raises tough moral questions, pushing the characters to their limits and forcing them to reevaluate their ideals, all while zombies roam the halls and lurk beyond the gates.Vol. 5: The Best Defense Issues 25-30This installment is brutal.Rick and the gang seem to be settling into their new prison setup. Yes, several people are struggling, but overall things are going okay…until, of course, they aren’t. This volume is especially horrific. Honestly, it doesn’t completely shock me, in a scenario like this, women would be at risk of terrible things. Still, it’s psychologically intense and deeply disturbing to watch and read. They did a pretty good job of portraying an awful situation without sexualizing or sensationalizing, while still being gut-wrenching. I simultaneously wanted to throw my iPad across the room and couldn’t look away.Vol. 6: This Sorrowful Life Issues 31-36We pick up with Rick and Michonne being held captive and tortured by the Governor, a villain somehow more terrifying than zombies.This is an extra-gory installment. I was anxious for Michonne’s torture arc to reach its resolution, and it does so in a truly epic way. These issues continue to push the envelope, exploring the evolution of people’s minds and morality.Vol. 7: The Calm Before Issues 37-42Everyone is battening down the hatches at the prison in anticipation of an attack. The garden is in bloom under the summer heat, Lori is nearing the end of her pregnancy, and there’s even a happy occasion with Glenn and Maggie’s wedding. While there are some lighter moments in this collection, it still delivers plenty of intense and gruesome scenes, ending on a major cliffhanger.Vol. 8: Made To Suffer Issues 43-48This volume picks up with flashbacks of Woodbury showing the events that led up to the Governor and the people at the prison gates. The story is nonstop action with plenty of gut-wrenching moments .Even though I anticipated some of these events from my general knowledge of the series, they were still hard to see play out. I’m especially glad I didn’t have to wait between issues, otherwise I would’ve been pulling my hair out. I’m relieved to see this story arc resolved, though there are still many questions about which survivors remain. I’m anxious to see how everyone is coping and what they do next!
