Forget Your Doubts - This Stuff Is Great
Other reviewers have commented that this is nothing but black contact paper. This is true - it IS black contact paper. When you first take it out of the package, you feel it and think that it feels NOTHING like a chalkboard and that there is NO WAY ON EARTH that it is going to take chalk well. Disappointment and resentment may well up inside you. But take heart! This stuff is actually fantastic, and takes chalk like a CHARM. There are a couple of secrets to getting it to work just like a regular chalkboard. The first is quite intuitive: make sure you apply it carefully to a very smooth surface. I don't think a textured wall will work well. Alas, I have quite textured walls in my house, and I wanted to use it as wallpaper for a small section of my daughter's room. Well, I scrapped that idea and applied it to a large piece of masonite board (you know, the stuff that is often used for pegboard, but without the rows of holes). This masonite board ( Hardboard Masonite Panel- 18x24x1/8 Inch ) is VERY smooth on both sides (although the stuff you get at the hardware store is often very rough and fiberous on the other side). Proper application should also include taking the time to remove any bubbles that arise under the surface; the paper is slightly repositionable, or you can use the side of a credit card or ever-popular and-extraordinarily-useful-for-all-sorts-of-things scraper such as Nylon Pan Scrapers (Set of 2) , to gently (GENTLY!) rub the bubbles out. The second secret is less intuitive. When you first try to draw on the stuff with chalk, it will seem like it is not working at all. The chalk might barely show up, or it may not draw smoothly. More disappointment and resentment may flood you. HOWEVER, most chalkboards come with instructions that say to color (with chalk, obviously) all over the board and then erase it before the first time you try to use it "for real". Do this! Rub with the side of the chalk (evenly and lightly will do it) all over the board - and then erase it using a regular felt chalkboard eraser like the Alex Felt Chalk Board Eraser with Wooden Grip , DRY paper towel, or similar. For reasons I cannot explain, this makes chalkboards "take" the chalk much more smoothly. You may have to repeat this step one more time, but after this, I think you will find that the chalkboard paper does in fact work JUST LIKE a REAL CHALKBOARD!! Yay! (They call this step "curing" the chalkboard, and it is necessary for ALL chalkboards, if you really want to prep the surface well - go ahead, google "curing chalkboard" and see what you get!) Your chalkboard paper should now work beautifully. Mine works with all sorts of colored chalks, such as Colored Chalk (16) , or even Colored Drawing Chalk 24-Stick Pack , or similar. Even regular sidewalk chalk, like Melissa & Doug 10 Jumbo Triangular Chalk Sticks . Or, if your chalkboard is for your child(ren), surprise him/her/them with I Can Draw People (Usborne Playtime) , I Can Draw Animals (Kid Kits) , or similar kits from Usborne, which include a nifty instruction book and jumbo colored chalks. So, to sum up, for perfect results from your chalkboard contact paper: 1) Apply it carefully to a very smooth surface, being sure to get the bubbles out. 2) Cure it by coloring it all over with the side of a piece of chalk and then erasing it, two times, with a DRY eraser. Now ENJOY! After this, I would be very surprised to hear that you were not completely satisfied with the product. (And I do NOT work for the company that sells it, either!) :-) X*X*X*X* EDITED REVIEW JANUARY 23, 2012 X*X*X*X*X Thank you everyone for your ever-so-kind comments about my review. I am so glad that you have found it helpful over the past year and I hope that the review continues to be of assistance in the future. As of now, our chalkboard is still "up and running" so to speak, and although it is a little the worse for the wear (doesn't erase quite as well as it once did, has some spots that are difficult to write on) it is still a source of amusement and joy to my now-six-year-old. It gets heavy use with a variety of chalks, and has occasionally been misused with crayons, but it has held up very well. I still highly recommend it, at least for the use to which I have put it - a child's chalkboard. I am writing this revision also to let future readers know that I will not be following the comments on this review anymore as of now. I love knowing that my words have been helpful, and hope they continue to be so. Good luck with whatever chalkboard you decide to go with! X*X*X*X*X*X*X*X*X*

Works like magic
This was one of those times where I stumbled across a concept on the internet (Contact paper chalkboard?!) and thought it sounded brilliant, but too good, and too simple, to be true. Thankfully, Amazon offered enough positive feedback to convince me to take a chance. And it became one of those times when I was pleasantly surprised. This Contact paper WORKS. Like previous reviewers have noted, it's best to prime the chalkboard before use. After sticking it on the wall, rub chalk sideways across the whole thing, getting it good and chalky, and then erase. After doing so, I had no problem with this chalkboard whatsoever. We've coupled it with a tiny-hands appropriate Melissa & Doug Felt Chalk Eraser and Alex Toys Dot To Dot Sidewalk Chalks (4+1) 217 and voila! Our son's playroom now has a relatively mess free, fairly inexpensive, eco-friendly creative outlet, in the form of a simple chalk wall. This option saves the cost and ecological impact of having to buy drawing paper constantly. It protects walls, because stray chalk marks just brush off. And it's MUCH cheaper than buying stain-safe magical paper from Crayola. This option is superior to chalkboard paint because it removes quickly and easily. I've always been wary of chalkboard paint, not only because it's so dark it seems impossible to paint over, but also because I have no idea how well it CAN be painted over, and am in no hurry to ruin the walls of our house. Couldn't be more pleased with this product, and neither could my son. The best part? We've only used half of the roll so far.

Really cool when used right
Wanted something like white board in my room, being a college kid ideas come and sometimes you just want to see your notes or objectives or shopping list or whatever, somewhere visible at all times. This was a cheap first time alternative from painting my room with that expo marker white board paint, which I can't do in a dorm room, and taped up pieces of paper doesn't really look good. So I saw it and tried it out. it really wasn't a bad idea, I was worried that it wouldn't stick or it wouldn't write or it would just be like a strip of paper on my wall but I did my research and I suggest you do to, and I was a little more confident with this item after I looked around and read more comments about it. I got it, it came relatively quickly, well with all the items I purchase online I kinda forget about them and then when i get that email that its here then im like wow that was fast, so don't quote me on that. So I got it, and looked at it, the instructions was simple and I put it up, by myself, horizontally, at about 2 feet. Also it relatively straight, so either I'm a boss or it really not that hard. On writing on it, its as everyone says, you just need to mark up on it with chalk, rubbing it all over the paper and wiping it off. I did this process twice and then the magic happened. Overall very nice, if you just want to try this out the price is try worthy and if you don't like it its not like you lost a fortune and I only cut one piece off and I have a whole roll left. I haven't pulled it off yet so I can't tell you how would that go but I heard there's no residue...but I don't believe that, skepticism talking.

A squeegee makes a world of difference!
It makes a great, instant chalkboard. It works just like any chalkboard, provided you apply it the way I will describe, and definitely PRE-SEASON it, before you draw or write on it. I gave it four stars instead of five, because I think if they shipped on a cardboard tube, there would be no wrinkles, and it would be much easier to apply perfectly. As it was, the roll was in a box, but with nothing to support it internally, so there were some wrinkles, which created a problem when it came to application. I just applied a 36" X 18" piece to my stainless steel French-door refrigerator's freezer drawer (located on the bottom of the fridge). With the help of my six-year-old daughter, it was not easy to apply, but entirely do-able, especially once we got the squeegee in on the action. I started by thoroughly cleaning the surface to which I was applying the chalkboard paper, so that if I had to re-position it, I wouldn't be ruining the adhesion with dirt that the sticky part picked up. I started with Goof-Off, then wiped it off. Then, I switched to my own mixture of Dr. Bronner's soap and water, followed by dish soap and water, then plain water, followed by a spray bottle with some rubbing alcohol and water. Then, I thoroughly dried it. Because I applied it horizontally, I lined up the short side with the shine on the door, peeled back about an inch from the side, and stuck it down. At first, we tried to use our hands, and fingers, to smooth out bubbles here and there, but we kept having to peel back and start again. Finally, it dawned on me to use the squeegee, and things took off from there. The trick is to just to apply a narrow bit at the beginning. Only peel off a little of the baking at a time, only as much as you need to stick down at that moment. Make sure all those bubbles are smoothed out, then while someone holds the roll, you control tension with one hand, and just use the squeegee, on the non-sticky side, to get the paper to make contact with your surface. Push the squeegee toward the point of separation. If one section tends to get more bubbly than another, start by squeegeeing the difficult section first, and the smooth, easy section will be no problem. Otherwise, work from the middle down, the the middle up, holding the squeegee parallel to where the contact paper and the backing are separating, as you hold tension on the unused part. Take heart, it is easily repositionable, multiple times. If you mess up, just peel up, and redo that area. Once I got about three or four inches down and smooth, I stopped what I was doing, to check to see if my positioning of the roll was level. It was. Using the light reflection/shine as my marker really worked well. If you had a laser level, that would probably work, too. An old fashioned plum bob might work, too, but I think light was quite handy. Once I checked to make sure it was level, I also decided I wanted the bottom section of what I had already put down to be entirely smooth and free of wrinkles or bubbles, so I unstuck that bottom part, and squeegeed it down horizontally, rather than vertically, as I had been going. Once I took care of that, it seemed to arrest the chain reaction of wrinkles and bubbles that had been plaguing the bottom section, and it was fairly quick work from there. Just keep tension with one hand, use only about a centimeter of unpeeled from the backing section at a time, and let the squeegee do the work. I used a Simple Human squeegee, by the way. It didn't catch at all on the chalkboard surface. It helped to have my daughter's assistance at times, to hold tension, keeping the sticky part away from the surface, when I needed her to. When we had it on there, the only thing left to do, is what you have to do to all unused chalkboard before you use it, and that is season it thorougly. Rub the side of a piece of white chalk all over the entire surface of the board. Then, using an eraser, rub in circles, until a gray haze covers the whole surface. You're good to go from there. The kids have been taking turns sitting on a little stool and doing their drawings ever since. I am pleased enough that I am ordering a whole 'nother roll, so I can do the top doors. I plan to have an inventory of what's in there, plus the date we bought or made a thing on one door, and a grocery list and a meal plan on the other door. I am hoping it will help cut down on the kids' propensity to open the door and browse. Plus, I hope to cut down on waste, by preventing lettuce getting shoved to the back and forgotten about until it turns to liquid, or leftovers going bad simply because they were forgotten.

The Write Stuff!
Love this stuff! Never would have thought to purchase it if I hadn't seen it featured as a Lightning Deal (total impulse purchase, way to go marketing dept). We'd long been disappointed with wipe boards. Not only do they make the kitchen in our home look like the conference room at work, but finding available wall space in our kitchen is harder than finding a parking space in Manhattan. This seemed a good alternative at first sight, but proved to be the superior choice. Yes, it is difficult to work with if you're unfamiliar with it, as I was. It is critical that you properly clean the surface to which you intend to apply this material. It's also important to let that surface dry completely prior to application. Take the time to measure and pre-cut the sheeting. And, perhaps most important if you intend to apply a large piece, DO NOT WORK ALONE. Let me put that another way… DO NOT ATTEMPT TO INSTALL THIS ALONE. A second set of hands is essential for proper, wrinkle-free application. This is VERY sticky stuff. Remove the waxy backing slow-slow-slowly as you "wipe" the paper into place a scotche at a time, taking special care to iron away any and all wrinkles/bubbles as you marry the adhesive side to your surface. We applied a 24x52-inch piece to the stainless-steel door on our refrigerator and couldn't be happier with the results. It helped that we applied a smaller (12x12-inch) test piece beforehand, but there were still a couple oh-my-God-your-gonna-ruin-it moments during the application of the larger piece. The wife was in charge of keeping the paper straight and slack-free (NOT TAUT*) as I sloooowwwly removed the waxy backing while also wiping/smoothing the paper onto the surface with a dry paper towel (smoooooth out those wrinkles and bubbles). In the end it looked (and continues to look) like a factory-installed upgrade. Plain old sidewalk chalk can be used, but we prefer Crayola's washable DryErase Bright Crayons because the result is a more-legible, more-colorful, dust-free writing/drawing experience. The sheeting stays stuck (3 months and counting), and it comes cleans easily with a damp piece of paper towel, or with the DryErase cloth that was included in the Crayola crayon box. * NOT TAUT! This material is very stretchy. If you're not careful during the application of it, you're liable to end up with a misshapened, hopelessly wrinkled mess instead of the perfect square, or proper rectangle you cut to size. Unless you're a huge Salvador Dali fan, go easy. "Slack-free" is not the same as "taut."

Genius!!!!
so far I've only had it for a week or so but it was super easy to install on the side of my refrigerator and it's provided a lot of fun using regular hard chalk by my toddler. Easy to wipe clean. We have a chalk eraser and it leaves a bit of a smudge residue but if you take a damp paper towel to it it wipes completely clean. I had a bit left over from the fridge so put a strip on the inside of my cupboard and used liquid chalk markers to write three of my most used recipes on it: kid's play dough, a no-knead bread recipe, and a beloved pancake recipe. No need to crack open the recipe book, just flip open the cabinet for simple recipes. My husband thinks it's genius since he makes the pancake for my toddler a bunch and in the past had to keep asking me for the recipe. It looks great. There's measurements/cutting lines on the back to make it easy to cut a straight line. Peeled and adhered perfectly with one try, gently pressing out the bubbles as you peel backing off and press onto surface. I love it!

Great Concept!
Con-tact Brand Self Adhesive Chalkboard Liner is a great concept! And it does work - you can write on it in chalk and erase. I loved the idea of just sticking chalkboard on the wall, and wanted to get some of the Con-tact brand to compare with chalkboard paint, as well as some other products we have. The pros of the Con-tact Brand Self-Adhesive Chalkboard Liner, are that it's self-adhesive (!), and that you don't have to deal with painting. The cons are that this isn't really meant to go on walls I guess. I know it's Con-tact "Liner", but I don't know anyone who wants to put chalkboard in a drawer! The material is uber thin! and rips very easily! So please be very careful when applying the liner! I DID use it on one of our son's walls - he's very creative, and posts all of his new drawings - so I thought it would be fun for him to have chalkboard right next to his bed. I would recommend if you try this cut a piece off and see how it goes on before attempting a large piece! It's really important to "place it" on the wall from the center of your piece, and then use a straight edge to smooth from the center ... outward - just like wallpapering. If not you're likely to get bubbles or ripping. I was lucky to find this out with the first piece I tried! (I'm not a direction reader!) So after the first piece it went on pretty much without a hitch. And it can be pulled up and adjusted somewhat ... not a lot, but if you haven't gotten too far into your piece, you'll probably be okay to pull up and adjust - like you might with wallpaper.

My Made a Schedule Board for me
As a well-known procrastinator, my wife figure it would be a good idea to build a chalk-board schedule thinga-ma-bober. We bought a typically poster board to mount this chalk-board liner on. After trying to adhere the paper by myself and getting tons of bubbles (reminds me of trying to put a plastic-screen protector on an Iphone), I got my wife to help out. Between the both us, one holding up the paper and the other smoothing down with our hand, we got it on to our foam board nice and neat with no bubbles. We use chalk-markers and it works rather well. To clean it, we use a damp paper towel and it cleans up nicely. Overall this is a great product that can be used for a variety of applications, my wife has been sticking this stuff all over our house. So I would definitely by this again... actually we have already bought it again and again... and again, as well as recommend this my friends. It is easy to get bubbles, but with a little patience, time and help, you can get a very nice clean look.

Muy buen producto
Es muy práctica. Se puede recortar en cuadros considerables para cubrir varias áreas y se pueda pintar ahi. Es fácil de cortar por las marcas que trae atrás y fácil de pegar. Me encantó y a mis hijos también

It's CHALKingly Good!
I was surprised this was such a good product. We bought this for my kids, who are now learning from home due to the closing of schools from COVID-19. Excellent buy and saves us from using paper. Cutting and applying was easy. Chalk also comes off easily without streaks. Good buy.

great with liquid chalk and regular chalk
great with liquid chalk and regular chalk, sticks well put also peels off easily, not chipping any paint at all and can be re-applied in a different spot, although I am assuming the adhesive will wear out at some point if continuously re-applied. nice grid on back for precise cutting. definitely recommend!
