Any tips on picking the correct size?

According to Mizuno's website, the circumference of the user's leg should be measured 1" above the knee. I've provided their sizing guide based on that measurement below:Small (11 yrs & under): Under 13.5" Medium (12-15 yrs): 13.5"-15.5" Large (16 yrs & older): Over 15.5""

Is there some kind of hard material in them or is it just soft throughout?

There is nothing has in it. They have stiff foam to protect the knees. But nothing hard you would want to fall on.

Is a pair of pads or just one pad?

Yup. It's a pair (as in two knee pads).

My daughter is 11 yo and weighs 83#. measurement 1 in above kneecap is 11 1/2. not sure if she needs a small or med?
