With the lid closed the Recycler is approximately 9" deep x 13" wide x 16" tall

Could this work freestanding? Without attaching to a door?

No, the bag is not firm enough. I didn't attach mine to a door though, instead have it hanging on the side of a (industrial) wire shelf.
