Good primer but included instructions with camera are good
D90 for dummies is a good primer. But, the instruction manual and quick start up are both well written and easy to understand. The menu system with the help assistance built into the camera are also first rate. Read D 90 for dummies and enjoy but your camera comes with all that you really need.

Good way to start and to review the basics
I have had the D90 for years, but this book helped me learn some new things... and reviewed other things I already knew. It is easy to follow along with camera in hand, and the style of writing makes learning fun for "this" dummie. I own the book written by one of the "nikonians", and I like this book better. Less opinion and more useful facts. I should add that I bet there are other books on the D90 for more advanced users too. So, buy many and learn alot. Have Fun!

Wonderful book. Thank you!
This book was much more helpful than the mfr. supplied manual. It walks you step-by-step through more information than you probably need to know. I had never owned anything but point-and-shoot cameras before, and was referred to this book by a friend and professional photgrapher. I'm glad she did! You'll be able to learn not just the auto settings and what you can do with them, but the P,S,A, and M settings as well. From aperture, shutter speed and ISO to White Balance and the Nikon specific terms and features that will allow you take the perfect shot time after time. The sky is the limit with this camera and this book will help you achieve all that you want to do with it!

Easier Read Than the Manual
When I was thinking of what to say in this review, it occurred to me that reading "Nikon D90 for Dummies" was like having a friend walk you through what the camera does -- and then I read similar comments by another reviewer. When I was looking for a book to help me understand the D90 and all it could do, I narrowed my choices down to Julie Adair King's (JAK) book and Ben Long's "The D90 Companion." I have no regrets in buying either one. JAK's book is well written and very well illustrated. Some may find the continual references to other sections repetitious, but those cross references are most helpful when you use the book as a reference. "... for Dummies'" scope is limited to what the D90 does and how the user activates the various functions. JAK has written other books on photography which presumably pick up where this book leaves off. I'd recommend reading this book with your D90 close at hand. Try what she says on YOUR D90. And of course practice! As we all know, all your pictures except the first one are free.

So easy to read and understand!!
I have read thru the manual that comes with the Nikon D90 and only understood some of it. This book breaks it down in sections that are very easy to read and understand. I was surprised. I have learned so much just reading it once.

Same photos in the D40 book
Purchased this book for the D90 because I bought it when I had my D40. Author used the exact same images in the Nikon D90 for Dummies as were used in the Nikon D40 for Dummies. That was disappointing. Since the D90 had so many more features than the D40, I was hoping it would help me learn about the D90. For the most part, I found it helpful.

Experienced and novice
King's book is an excellent, lucid guide to the D90 which complements very well Ken Rockwell's more opinionated, but thoroughly informative on-line guide. King's book is comprehensive and should appeal equally to those who are new to contemporary SLR digital photography and the very experienced photographer. For instance, King treats the 'point and shoot' modes seriously and shows their posssibilities in a positive and non-patronising light. By this she encourages the beginner to become confident in using these settings as ones which which are valuable in themselves and as a way of gradually seeing the point and possibilities of the advanced modes. King writes well. She is clear, uses simple language and combines her text with the copious illustrations in a tight fashion. In other words you don't have to keep flipping three or four pages which separate the words from the pics. I highly recommend the book but I also recommend Rockwell's on-line guide as well to be read side by side King's. He sometimes makes strong recommendations about settings. I like this because he is never domineering and it can be a real help if you are new to digital SLR photography; but it can sometimes get in the way of exporing the camera's possibilities for yourself. King's book is more 'neutral' in this respect and so in some ways frees you up to try things out a bit more than Rockwell's guide does. I shouldn't, but sometimes when I don't follow one of Rockwell's strong suggestions, I feel worried that I am going against the expert's grain. Of course, that's my fault not Rockwell's, but I liked King's book especially because it told me what the camera is capable of and freed me up 'to play'. After all, if you don't like your results you can scrub them out in a twinkling.

Pretty Good
If you have bought a D90 but have literally zero knowledge of photography, this book is great. It does what it says on the tin. If you know about exposure, apeture settings, etc already it's probably not worth it.
