Excellent aftermarket cylinder for Aeron
This China aftermarket gas cylinder for Aeron was EASY to install, fit perfectly and worked immediately upon installation. I DID have an extremely difficult time removing the original HM cylinder from the chair. It had been there for decades. The online videos made the removal look way easier than it was. It took a number of overnight WD-40 soaking, the biggest heaviest pipe wrench I could get and a LOT of aggression in numerous sessions to incrementally move that old cylinder a few millimeters at a time. When it finally came out, the new one slipped in like a charm, what a surprise, it was a good quality purchase. The chair being an original HM Aeron would cost close to $1K to replace...and was a Great Incentive to put up with the hassle.

Get ready to wrench that old cylinder right out of there!
25 year old Herman Miller Aeron chair that's done right be me all this time finally gave up the ghost a few days ago, the cylinder extended to its full height in its dying gasp and wouldn't go down and when I sat down on it I wobbled around disconcertingly. Being uneducated about the cylinder replacement I tried to force it down until it ended up all the way down and wouldn't go back up, laugh. I watched the replacement videos and thrilled to the prospect of using my large pipe wrench for the second time. New one arrived and boy the reviews and testimonials about removing old crusted cylinders was really spot on in my case. It took WD-40 and multiple angle attempts, I think I finally did it by pulling the wrench towards me like I was rowing! Once that was done, and knocking out the old cylinder from the legs with a hammer it was an easy peasy replacement. Note, remember to take off the protective tip on the new cylinder so you expose the green part. I had to adjust the set screw as others have w/ a 5/32 hex wrench, I didn't have to take off the seat I just popped the shroud off and wrenched it from the back. Now I'm back in business with my old war-horse. Will it be another 25 years? We'll see. Recommended. (j4.)

Put away the huge tools and work smarter
These cylinders are one size fits all... usually. Installation is not that hard provided you do a few things: Step 1: PUT AWAY THE PIPE WRENCH. I used to be a shadetree handyman like you, thinking I could hulk my way through any problem with a big enough wrench and a stubborn personality. Stop being cheap, stop wasting your time and sweat and buy one of the little o-clamp kits that are sold with these pistons. The right tool for the right job will save you time and frustration. Judging on how many people complain about removing the old dead piston with a wrench, this advice is sorely needed. Step 2: PUT AWAY THE HAMMER/MALLET. Now that the top of the dead piston is separated from the chair, you need to coax the wheels off of it. Again, resist the urge to hulk smash your way through life's problems. Instead, take the wheel/piston half of your chair outside, and find a nice hard patch of concrete/asphalt. Heck, compacted dirt would probably work too, but I'm a city boy so sidewalk it was for me. After removing the wheels, hold it normal side down from a few feet in the air, and drop it. The piston hits the ground and slides out of the wheel hub thingie. If this doesn't work then call the Smithsonian, because your chair must be a historical artifact that belongs in a museum. OPTIONAL STEP 3: If, like me, when you finally reassemble the entire chair back with the new piston, only to find it sinks completely and immediately upon plonking yourself back into it, sorry bud, you gotta take it apart again for one last step. Don't worry, it will all come apart much easier this time. You might notice a plastic piece on the tip of piston. Now is the time to rejoice boys and girls, because you get to finally act out some of those destructive tendencies you had to curb in the first two steps. Get yourself nice strong clippers or scissors, and chomp away at the top of that plastic nub. Give it the ol Rb Tuckman's half off special. You don't even have to be neat about it, no one will ever see it. After it looks sufficiently gnawed on, put 'er back together and marvel: The extra plastic no longer triggers the piston release button. You can now get back to watching cat videos in comfort.

Herman Miller Aeron chair gas cylinder replacement
My CoPilot AI recommended this cylinder, and it fit and worked perfectly the first try. What a difference with the Herman Miller classic Aeron chair. Excellent product.

The old cylinder was very difficult to remove
The new cylinder works fine. The old cylinder was stuck to the bottom of the chair, not the base. Pipe wrench wouldn't work. Had to remove the height adjustment assembly, then I beat on the top of the old cylinder with a hammer and chisel.

Extremely short lifespan
its simple enough to install and utilize however in 3 months the piston is useless. It sinks no matter what height is set.

Great replacement, going on 2 years with my first.
Use the biggest pipe wrench you have to remove it from the chair base. To remove from the wheeled portion, just tap out with a hammer. I've bought 3 of these with no problem.

Heavy Duty It Is NOT! Cheap and Nasty and Will Not Last
On arrival this gas cylinder looked excellent. Well packaged and arrived quickly. Instructions were almost non-existent - "go find a YouTube video...." - and no mention of the tools you would need (a pipe wrench and a solid, non-damaging mallet). However, I overcame these obstacles quite easily and managed to get it swapped over. My original chair gas cylinder for my Herman Miller Classic Aeron Chair has lasted from 2004 until 2023 and took a bit of effort to remove, but I got it removed and replaced it with this and made the necessary adjustments so it worked perfectly - hooray! After just 2 days I noticed the chair felt a little wobbly from side to side and front to back. Everytime I move in the chair it feels more unstable. The photo shows where the top part of the wider section of the cylinder seems to be coming away from the main section, and this is what is causing the wobbling. The video shows the actual extent of the problem, with the top part rocking from side to side, and this is getting worse every day and I'm sure will eventually break away completely. I'll be returning this and buying something else.

Best priced quality gas cilinder.
Solid gas cilinder for my areon classic chair. This seller was very attent and nice, they contacted me right after my purchase to ensure me that my package would be delivered on time. And it did, it come three days earlier. my previous gas cilinder broke and so I could lift my chair of the base, because the outer shell of the old cilinder stayed attached to my chairs base. this is unusual but it happens sometimes. At first I thought that this 20 cm long pipe was where the new cilinder would go in, but I was wrong. It had to come off and I had a really hard time getting it off, nothing worked, pliers and wrenches got wrecked in the process. eventually I took the seat off and removed the the cap and put a deep socket on the cilinder and beat it out with a small sledgehammer. After that everything was easy and my chair sits great again. I must add that it would be good to know that after installing, the seller recommended adjusting the pump screws on the side of the chair. In my case this was not necessary, my chair was lowering when sad on it but I needed to adjust the screw above the cilinder. Happy customer, 5 out of 5.
