Legend has it that when preparing props for the James Bond film Live and Let Die , producer Albert Broccoli commissioned Surrealist maestro Salvador Dalí to create a custom deck of tarot cards . Inspired by his wife Gala, who nurtured his interest in mysticism, Dalí eagerly got to work, and continued the project of his own accord when the contractual deal fell through. The work was published in a limited art edition in 1984 that has since long sold out, making Dalí the first renowned painter to create a completely new set of cards . Drawing on Western masterpieces from antiquity to modernity (including some of his own), Dalí seamlessly combined his knowledge of the arcane with his unmistakable wit . The result is a surreal kaleidoscope of European art history . TASCHEN resurrects all 78 cards in a fresh celebration of Dalí’s inimitable custom set, complete with a booklet by renowned German tarot author Johannes Fiebig offering an introduction to Dalí’s life and the project’s making-of, a comprehensive explanation of each card ’s composition, its meaning, and practical advice, step-by-step instructions on how to perform readings, and a jargon-free approach simplifying tarot for the newcomer. Review: great package book and tarot - beautiful book and tarot. great coffee table piece. Review: An absolutely stunning and unexpectedly pleasant tarot deck - I came across this deck while searching for cheap $8-15 tarot cards to make some mismatched/chaos decks that I’m gifting out to friends. This one caught my eye even though it’s out of the price range. I browsed some of the reviews and thought it may be worth the splurge, as a unique addition into the mismatched decks I’m creating. The ONLY negative thing I have to say about this deck, is that it’s well above the standard 2.75/4.75” tarot size (I’ve added a few pictures with a standard size RWS card beside for reference) and it’s not annotated in the product description. I opted not to crop the cards as I’ve done with other decks for this project, and keep them as an intact set because of how unique these cards are to all my personal decks. The entire set is beyond gorgeous and extremely high-quality. I’ve seen artisan decks of a fraction of the quality and effort, printed in China, be hot sellers for double/triple the price. The author has taken tremendous care to narrate a story behind each card that aligns beautifully with universal tarot descriptions while simultaneously bringing Dali’s work to life. Although this deck may be used as a substitute for any other typical tarot reading, I’ve decided to refrain from reading them reversed and creating spreads like I would with a normal tarot deck, and use them purely for single-card oracle reading. This is partially due to the enormous size of the cards, but also because the author does such an excellent job at bringing Dali’s art to life. You could spend hours examining one card, with or without the accompanying guidebook. It’s as profound as walking through an art gallery in that respect.

Beautiful!
This is so much more than I expected. I ordered it and then had buyers remorse and tried to cancel it, but amazon sent it anyway. The cards are beautiful and high quality, as is the box and book that come with it. The book is so detailed and having a multilingual edition helps a lot, living in a state that’s almost 50/50 in languages spoken by the citizens. It has English, Spanish, German, and French. The cards are very tall, taller than any other deck I own, so shuffling is difficult, especially with my small hands, but not impossible. Definitely will take some practice. Some of the imagery is a bit of a stretch and it’s a bit more abstract/composite style so it’s not all in Dalí style like you may be accustomed to. Overall, it was a great buy, even better since amazon helped me out with a refund since they couldn’t cancel my order.

It’s so cool!
I was not expecting it to be so huge! The box is gigantic and covered in velvet. The guidebook is just as big with tons of valuable information! The cards are beautiful. I’m so excited to start using this deck!

Great Deck!!!
This is a great buy! I saw this at an art museum in Barcelona and didn't have any more room to bring it back. The interpretation is straight-foward useful advice!

Collectors, purchase at own risk. Readers, this is a phenomenal deck to work with.
Some of these gripes are downright ridiculous, but some hold some merit, so heres my 2 cents. Over the course of a month I have ordered 3, YES THREE, of these decks. I have recieved exactly 0 complaints from 2 friends i have gifted these to and the cosmetic defects from production are something I will touch on in a moment. The quality of the deck is what I would expect from a deck of cards I have full intent of using as a tarot reader, but leaves a smidge to be desired for those who want a show piece as im sure many fans of Dali would appreciate. One friend pointed out he would have loved to see guilding on the deck and we have discussed whether or not he will choose to hand gild himself, but it's one thing that can add a nice touch for sure. Personally, I so very appreciate the artwork used and how it affects my interpretations and readings, that being said, this is not a beginner's deck by any means. It certainly does add beautiful depth to traditional meanings and allows for intuitive readers to step away from the mainstream artistry most often used. Regarding the packaging: for collectors this has SO MUCH POTENTIAL to be a beautiful piece but it's just missing the mark. The textiles used for both the book and box leave very little room for error as both show damage from production very easily. A velvet like material on the box shows blemishes that cant just be smoothed away, and a satiny-matte finish on the book shows oils....even from what appears to be the conveyor belt and ABSOLUTELY shows finger prints way too easily. Theres noticeable scratches on the book cover upon opening, but I'm not a collector type wanting this as a conversation piece, and these are items I expect will recieve wear and tear in my hands. Fortunately, one of the recipients recieved one with very little manufacturing damage to his and he is a huge Dali fan, but not a tarot reader. So I'm very satisfied that his came in a much better condition.

Gaudy case, excellent cards
Comes in an oversized purple, velour like case (maybe 8 x 14, like a legal pad) with a recessed cutout for the deck of cards to sit in (housed in a flashy gold cardboard box) and space for the larger book to be seated on top. Each card collages a piece of classical art that Dali, acting as an art historian, then riffs on with surrealist elements. It's worth looking up the wikipedia entry for the paintings used in the collages. They're entertaining and sometimes give a wry twist to the card's interpretation-- The Renaissance artist Carvaggio is commissioned by the church to paint the Virgin Mary. He spends the money on prostitutes, has one pose as his "Virgin", and it's a scandal. He never saw the painting, "Death of the Virgin", on display because he killed a man in a sword fight following a heated tennis match and had to flee Rome. The painting is one of the last depictions of the Virgin Mary dying a human death in Catholic lore (not glowing or floating). Dali only clips part of the composition, a young woman in mourning, and his take seems to conflate the "Death of the Virgin" with the 'death of a virgin', i.e. losing virginity. Maybe Mary loses her virginity when we cease to think of her as divine?
