At last, a way to improve your Tagalog! Written by Joi Barrios as the continuation of her best-selling Tagalog for Beginners book, Intermediate Tagalog is the first intermediate-level book designed specifically for people who already speak or understand some basic Tagalog and now wish to achieve greater fluency in speaking, reading and writing standard Filipinoโthe national language of the Philippines. The carefully-constructed lessons in this book point out common grammatical errors that English speakers make when speaking Tagalog, and present "real-life" conversations demonstrating how the language is spoken in Manila today. Extensive cultural notes are provided, along with exercises and activities that introduce the use of the Tagalog language in a wide range of everyday situations. Native speaker companion audio and printable flashcards are available for free download online. The 20 lessons give you all the basic skills needed to speak Tagalog fluently: paglalarawan (the ability to describe people, places and feelings); pagsasalaysay (the ability to tell a storyโwhether a news story, a folktale, or an anecdote); paglalahad (how to explain somethingโfor example, a custom or tradition, or how to cook a dish); and pangangatuwiran (reasoning and abstract thinking). Each lesson is carefully structured in six key parts: A "real-life" dialogue providing valuable conversational skills. A vocabulary list to expand your familiarity with common, everyday Tagalog words and expressions. A grammar review section (for example, on the correct uses of affixes in various sentence constructions). Insightful cultural notes presenting aspects of the Philippines that may seem "odd" to outsiders, to explain how Filipino culture shapes the way people speak. A reading passage from a story or newspaper article, with comprehension questions. A writing exercise designed to teach a specific writing skill. Using Intermediate Tagalog , you'll be able to talk about yourself, your family and your daily experiences using grammatically correct sentences and a native-speaker level vocabulary. All media content is alternatively accessible on the Tuttle Publishing website. Review: Be ready or start small. - I thought that I was "ready" for the book's advanced language skills. I wasn't. This book is designed for college level learning, so begin with... Tagalog For Beginners! Better yet, know a native Filipino to assist you. I am not afraid of advanced learning, but this book floored me. I love a challenge but... don't rush yourself. Ingat ka! Review: Excellent Learning Resource - This book did an excellent job at helping me improve my Tagalog. Before starting this book, I could understand simple speech and writing, but when I would try to look at authentic Tagalog texts or listen to authentic Tagalog videos, I struggled. But now, I feel way more confident and find myself actually being able to understand more in-depth Tagalog and I'm able to express myself better. There's a huge dearth in reliable Tagalog learning resources. And this helps fill that void. If the author could also create a resource for advanced Tagalog learners, that would be incredible!

Great
Book goes into handy topics! I bought this to study and understand Tagalog more deeply, since my parents speak Tagalog and never formally taught the language. This is a great resource! Canโt wait to dive in more!

Highly recommend!
If you donโt know Tagalog at all, I suggest starting with the beginner version of this book. As an aspiring ESL teacher, I really enjoyed the way this workbook was set up. I have been experimenting with different brands of language learning books and CD programs and I have to say this is top five!

Overall good quality book
This book has been helping me a lot. It's well-written but certainly not perfect. The audio CD is poor quality, and I doubt I will even use it. And the way the lessons progress is kind of abrupt. A chapter starts very simply, then gets harder, and harder, then ends. In 4 pages it seems to go from beginner to intermediate to advanced, then back to beginner. So someone at the correct skill level to use this book will probably want to look at the first 5 pages from each chapter, then cycle back to the middle of the chapters, then do the ends of each chapter once their skills improve. Overall I'm glad I bought it though. It has the info that you need to become fluent in Tagalog.

Amazing book
This and the beginner book by Joi Barrios have been invaluable. They've aided me in going from a complete beginner to someone who can engage in and have conversations with kabayan :) Thoroughly recommend. I'm really hoping an advanced one gets released!
