can these be used for homemade gumdrops?

If you can pour the liquid out and cut. Yes. Not good as a mold.

Are these too sharp to give a kid for play doh?

Each mold has a plastic top so they can easily be held by a child. They are small so getting the play doh out of the mold will be difficult and could be frustrating.
