If your 11 year old protege is wise enough to ask for one of these, he deserves both this and a 7in touchscreen Raspberry Pi monitor to support his future endeavors. Brilliant kid- sending virtual kudos.

This kit does not include a fan, right?

A small fan is included, but it is not really required unless you are going to run the board hard with 24/7 computing projects. For distributed computing projects where the CPU is run at 100%, the fan will hold temps down by about 10 deg C with the heatsinks.

How do you attach the heat sink? This is my 1st Pi.

The heat sinks aren’t officially a requirement but since they are in the kit it makes perfect sense to put the on especially if you plan to run your pi with passive cooling. Mine also came with the fan.
