The tray is made of metal. Good quality press.

Can I press pomegranates in this?

Yes. I use this to release anything that has liquid I want as the end product. It is sturdy and well built. I suspect reducing the pomegranate to just the arils will expedite the process, but this with it's large center post turn screw it will squeeze a whole pomegranate dry.
