Boatowners Mechanical and Electrical Manual 4/E

I wish I could meet Nigel and thank him for such an amazing book. Absolutely essential for any boat owner. Damn near every single boat friend I have has a copy of this book. It's a right of passage. Nigel has given so much to the world of boating that I simply have to support him. he's is also a great guy. It IS very technical but he always slims down the important takeaways.

Clearly laid out - step by step instruction and explanations of all the major boat systems

An updated version of the absolutely BEST boat systems maintenance book, bar none! All sections have been updated, but the electrical portion has been extensively revised. This alone makes the purchase of this new edition worth the cost. There is not another book that comes close to the depth covered in this book. (I have just finished a complete refit of my sailboat and I nearly wore out my copy of the previous version of the book because I referenced it so frequently.) I highly recommend this book for anyone who really wants to understand how to properly design, modify, maintain, or repair the various systems on their boat.

I bought this eBook at the request of many many many other boat owners and I am SO glad I did. It covers everything you need to know in great detail and from a scientific approach. (For example, what are the different types of sealers and where to use them appropriately, etc.) The book was sometimes a bit long winded, but spending a few days reading this book has saved me a fortune because all my boat projects were done right the first time. You know why BOAT stands for "break out another thousand"? Because people didn't read this book before they started their projects and had to redo them all multiple times. Haha. :) Do yourself a favor and learn from someone else's knowledge, not from your own expensive and frustrating mistakes.

If your boat is more complex than an open boat with an outboard, you should have this book. Covers most mechanical, electrical, and other problems you may face as a boater. Even if you don't do the work yourself it is worth it to know what needs to be done and how it should be done.

I must quibble with the title of this book, for this is Nigel Calder at his best: in depth and full knowledge of all things mechanical and electrical to do with boats. Thus I do not think it is a "manual", since for me that implies a step by step how-to presentation. Mind you, I have not yet put the book to the test, but if my boatyard gang does not hop to and start redoing my electrical system in my 39-year old Catalina 27 sailboat, then I will have to go to the book and see if I can figure it out on my own. The last owner was DIY all the way, and had the engineering and mechanical skills to do his own work. But that has led to a mother board that has switches controlling things other than what is written. But enough about my issues; this is a comprehensive and fabulous book, but I think I would get more out of it if it were the text for a community college course on the subject. If I have to do my own work, I will let you know how it works out!

The book is brilliantly written, clearly explained, objectively evaluating boat systems for the offshore yachtsman. I recommend it to anyone having a boat or contemplating a boat purchase. Personally I downloaded Nigel's book on my Kindle, allowing me to increase the font size for easy reading.

Very Helpful

This book is a must read for anyone designing or maintaing a boat electrical system. Before purchasing I did wonder how relavent it would be for an English Narrowboat as opposed to a sea going boat. Probably 70% is extremely useful. Just read ‘Moored outside the pub’ for ‘at anchor in a quiet bay’ I’ve 30 years experience in the automotive electronics industry and still learned a lot about battery charging and alternators. When the information wasn’t new it was presenting in an interesting and thought provoking way. It’s also very readable for a subject that could be very dry. Nigel’s Marine Diesel Engines is also highly recommended for narrowboat owners.

Detta framgår ju av titeln och är ingen kritik. Boken kan förefalla dyr, men det räcker att informationen ger information om en enda dyr reparation (vad skall man välja att byta till, kan man reparera själv, hur gör man, kan man förbättra eller effektivisera) så betalar den sig.

Forget buying any other books about boat mechanics and electrics. This is best I have ever seen. Well worth the money. Easy to read, well illustrated with pictures, diagrams and table.
