I used this on a door for smart home alerts and automations, and it has been excellent. It is small enough to be discreet, paired quickly with the hub, and has responded reliably every time the door opens or closes. The adhesive held well on a clean frame, and the two pieces are compact enough to position neatly. A simple but very useful smart home sensor.

I have used all the Aqara sensors for at least 8 years (started with Xiaomi/Mijia) bought direct from China initially) and through various hubs (Xiaomi, Aqara, Zigbee2Mqtt) they have never let me down. It is very small, always works and original battery is still going all those years later. While Xiaomi/Aqara always required quirks to support on 3rd party hubs, everything pretty much deals with it now and you are unlikely to have issues. However, this is still the "original" AQ2 version - not any of the updated Zigbee 3 versions (that also support firmware upgrades) that is a bit disappointing considering the year. While older ZB devices will be supported for many years, there may come a time newer hubs may drop the legacy "quirky" support and such older devices may be problematic again. Myself I would try not to get any of these older versions unless desperate to replace a failed sensor quickly,

I picked up a few of these Aqara sensors to use with my smart home setup, and they’ve been fantastic. They paired instantly with my Aqara hub and respond really quickly when a door or window is opened. The size is nice and compact, so they’re barely noticeable once installed. Battery life has been great so far, I’ve had them running for months and haven’t needed to replace anything. I get instant notifications on my phone, and they also trigger my smart lights and alarms without any delay. For the price, the quality and reliability are excellent. Perfect if you want to add a bit of extra security or automate your home without spending a fortune.

I was quite concerned that it might be too big for my thin door frame but it works out fine. The pictures are VERY misleading (in a positive way) in making the device look bigger than it is. This is tiny compared to the other door sensors I have had. Signal strength is on par with other battery-powered Zigbee devices I have and response time is practically instantaneous. Keep in mind that the 22mm wide gap is simultaneously both good and bad depending on usage. For example, it allows me to very slightly open my balcony sliding door for airflow without the alarm screaming (or needing to code for the alarm to not scream, compromising on security). It is also bad because you might also leave a door open without realising it. Very nit-picking but I'm sure there's a very niche use case out there that might be caught off-guard by this. 22mm is wider than you think. Now on the the Zigbee2MQTT bit, it's the same as my review of the Aqara motion sensor. Aqara is a Xiaomi brand, which makes me reluctant to use the Aqara hub and app, beyond just my dislike of being tied to a single ecosystem. It's ok to use their end devices (e.g. motion sensor, light bulbs) since Zigbee, on its own, doesn't allow any "phone home" capability since the network has no access to the Internet (unlike Wifi-based Smartlife / Tuya devices). The key is to secure the hub (aka bridge / coordinator) and app because they do have access to the Internet, most often for your own convenience. With that preface, I am glad to report that the Aqara Door Sensor works with Zigbee2MQTT open-source bridge (software) - tested with the popular Conbee II as well as Sonoff Zigbee 3.0 USB adapters plugged into a Raspberry Pi. Note, however, that you cannot mix in most non-Aqara devices that are router-capable (essentially anything that is plugged into the main i.e. no battery). Your non-Aqara will devices will work fine, it's the Aqara ones that will have a lot of connection troubles (apparently due to Xiaomi implementing non-standard interface - the more you don't want to use their hubs and apps). Some can coexist (e.g. IKEA bulbs) but for sure Hue bulbs don't. I tested adding a single Hue bulb to the network and all my Aqara devices acted up within a few hours. So now I have all the Aqara devices connected to a dedicated adapter running on its own Z2M docker, separated from my main Zigbee network (Hue bulbs and power switches).

The Aqara door and window contact sensors are a reliable and affordable solution for home security. I found them easy to install and configure and they worked straight of the bat with HomeKit. I have attached them to my front door as a security measure and it is great to receive instant notifications when the door is opened. At night time my Aqara camera - which serves as the hub - sounds an alarm upon opening the door. This has proven very useful on a few occasions. :-) For me the compact design and long battery life make them a practical choice. However, there seems to be a range limitation which might be a drawback in larger homes or buildings. This could be solved by adding an additional hub I suppose. Overall, the Aqara contact sensors offer great value for money and peace of mind. Will definitely purchase more!

⭐ I didn’t get this sensor to become immersed in the Aqara system and instead wished to pair it with my Home Assistant system. I must say that it works brilliantly and first time. I was replacing an existing sensor from another company, and after my experience so far, I will be switching to using these sensors in the future. I can confirm that you absolutely do not need an Aqara hub for this to work, although it does require a hub of some sort and a Zigbee coordinator. ⭐ The sensor is small with rounded corners and comes complete with sticky pads for surface mounting. The magnet is small but effective, and I think that the aesthetics are more pleasing than the boxier offerings of the competition. There are two very small notches in the plastic for alignment purposes, which is handy. The only confusing part is that the sensor also has internal temperature available. This is not the ambient temperature, and I am unsure why it is relevant to surface this metric. ⭐ Since installation, I have had no problems, no dropouts, or the need to re-pair it. I changed its name in Home Assistant to something more appropriate without any problem at all. I am happy to bin the old sensor for this one and will be buying more in the future. Well recommended. ✔️

Por ahora se ha conectado muy fácil al hub, tiene buena señal y la mantiene (importante) y sobretodo muy contento con su detector. Detecta a tienpo real si se abre la puerta y lo notifica instantáneamente sin retraso, es justo lo que buscaba para evitar las falsas alarmas, retrasos o desconexiones.
