Colorful, Informative Guide
I purchased this as a gift for my grandson and he loves it. It's colorful and packed with information about various rocks. There's interesting facts about many rocks. I would suggest purchasing a rock kit if the child has not begun a nice collection of rocks. I would purchase this item again.

Nice book - bought it to accompany rock tumbler
This book has great pictures and interesting text to share with young children. We bought this when we bought the smithsonian rock tumbler and it gave me and my kids something to discuss while using the tumbler. I enjoy the national geographic kids books in general - gets kids involved in non-fiction books.

Perfect for a young child
I bought this for a friend's 7 year old boy who after visiting quartz mines in New York started becoming interested in rocks. He LOVES this book. It has beautiful photos, vivid colors, and interesting facts. Easy to understand and designed almost like a comic book (little excerpts here and there). I might have to order another copy to keep here for my own kids (and maybe myself...) as they were reading through it before I could wrap it and thought it was really cool. The book is also printed on what feels like very durable and probably washable paper. The cover is paperback but feels very strong. Definitely made for a child's hands to flip through again and again.

What a wonderful, informative book!
What an interesting book! I got my 9 year old granddaughter a rock tumbler for her birthday, and this will be a great guide for her. She will have so much fun using this book to see what kind of rocks she gathers at her time on the beach or river bank. The illustrations are gorgeous and the book is easy to follow.

Great for any child interested in geology and gemstones
Absolutely brilliant. This was bought to accompany a gemstone advent calendar and is of the usual high NatGeo quality. Stacks of information and great images - plenty to look at and learn. I'd definitely rate this as suitable for 6 and up, it's a magazine quality book and worth the money.

So interesting!
Bought this as a gift for a young boy. My goodness, though, I think I want to read it! I flipped through the pages out of curiosity, and was floored at the amount of information. It's absolutely chock full of awesome tidbits for the kid who has an interest in the world and it's amazing features. So much to learn, and beautiful pictures to illustrate. There's a few simple experiments that can be done. It looks so interesting!
