Based on Plutarch's account of the lives of Brutus, Julius Caesar, and Mark Antony, Julius Caesar was the first of Shakespeare's Roman history plays. Presented for the first time in 1599, the play reveals the great dramatist's consummate ability to explore and express the most profound human emotions and instincts. So clearly and urgently does it impact its insights into history and human behavior, Julius Caesar is traditionally among the first of Shakespeare's plays to be studied at the secondary-school level. In addition to its compelling insights into the human condition, Julius Caesar is also superb drama, as Brutus, Cassius, and the other conspirators hatch a plot to overthrow Caesar, dictator of Rome. After Caesar is assassinated, Mark Antony cleverly turns the crowd against the conspirators in one of the most famous speeches in literature. In the civil war that follows, the forces of Mark Antony and Octavius Caesar eventually win out over the armies of Cassius and Brutus. Humiliated and desperate, both conspirators choose to end their lives. These tragic events unfold in a riveting dramatic spectacle that also raises profound questions about power, government, ethics, and loyalty. Now this great tragedy is available in this inexpensive edition, complete and unabridged with explanatory footnotes. Great play, great value
It had been a few decades since I last read this play, and I wanted a refresher. Honestly, I don't know why we push Shakespeare on kids. It's so much more meaningful in your 30's, 40's, 50's etc when you can better understand how sharp Shakespeare really was. At 14 Julius Caesar was meaningless and tiring to me. At 44 it's brilliant and so very relevant to modern times. I think it would be fascinating if everyone was forced to go through high school english lit at age 40 or so. Anyway, for $3, this book did well as something I could read in the bath without concern for it getting wet.

Julius Caesar Dover Thrift
The text of Julius Caesar is of course awesome. This version includes some helpful definitions and notes on difficult words and a short introduction to the play that is helpful for students. Unfortunately, Dover Thrift does not included line numbers. If it did, I would give the product 5 stars.

Text is good, kindle formatting is mediocre at best
I grabbed this for a reading of Julius Caesar at a friend's place, and while it did the job, the text was inexplicably double-spaced, so I had to keep swiping to the next page constantly! A small annoyance, but repeated throughout the 2+ hours it took us to read it. Text was accurate, though, and what a great play to read with friends! (Especially on March 15 over Caesar salad, as we did...)

Powerful drama
One of Shakespeare's greatest plays with great dramatic interest and some memorable language. This edition has a useful glossary to clarify archaic words. Professional narration added much additional pleasure to the play.
