Something wicked was brewing in the small town of Salem, Massachusetts in 1692. It started when two girls, Betty Parris and Abigail Williams, began having hysterical fits. Soon after, other local girls claimed they were being pricked with pins. With no scientific explanation available, the residents of Salem came to one conclusion: it was witchcraft! Over the next year and a half, nineteen people were convicted of witchcraft and hanged while more languished in prison as hysteria swept the colony. Author Joan Holub gives readers and inside look at this sinister chapter in history. Review: Easy read and very interesting. - Great read and easy. Love the info. Don't know how accurate it is but. Its a wonder how people believe in so many weird things and then punish each other for it as if they are any better. Review: Love this - I love this series! I've bough numerous other titles to donate to my child's school library

These always do a great job of condensing information while staying interesting
My daughter loves all the Who Was books, and is excited about starting What Were/Was books. These always do a great job of condensing information while staying interesting. They are understandable for elementary aged kids without being patronizing. Would definitely recommend.

my 9 yo said it was a little scary but enjoyed it
Not my personal favorite in this line of books out of about 15 read with my 9 year-old son. He said it was a little scary - witches - but enjoyed learning about the trials. Covers some adult themes that needed to be explained to my son, like what is a trial and hanging someone. Overall, he loves these books and also enjoyed this one. I'm really glad they came out with this line of Who Was / What Was books.

Insightful history for young readers
Bought this not fully realizing it was for younger readers (I should have figured that out from the cover). Nevertheless, it was a good introduction to the turmoil of this period, and it inspired me to go on and read more about the history of this blight on early American history.

Good book
Brilliant book used it for home schooling my 10 year old during the Corona lockdown. We had just come back from Salem so it was fun to study this topic. Book is excellent for children and makes it all easy to understand with lots insert that discuss puritans and where they came from etc...
