A comprehensive read!
This book is a good resource for my adult ignorance (cows started off as 4H project 35 yrs ago). My parents took up cattle as a retirement lark, then it got serious. There are still some areas that are queasy making: field first-aid, pulling calves, and various diseases. But the read is worth the knowledge of knowing what you're getting into. (Try not to love what you do, it's just a bunch of cows. NOT. *Wink*)

Highly recommend it
I work as a part time cattleman. The farmer I work with recommended this book. I got it and have been studying it as I learn the trade. It covers great detail about everyday tasks and subjects. I like the fact that it covers broad handling tips about staying calm and keeping cows calm, and then it handles very detailed info on parasites and diseases and how to treat them. It is a great book. It doesn't cover every single thing you need. There are several books you need in your library if you want to learn how to manage cattle. But this is a must book to own as part of that library.

a great starter book
My wife and I just started in the cattle industry. I have horses and rode bulls but never had to take care of any type of cow. We purchased a bred cow that was expecting any moment and were kinda intimidated by the whole thing, the people we got the cow from recomended this book because they said if they had this book starting it would have saved them a few times. It is a good basic guide to cattle, it covers a broad spectrum of problems and issues that a cattle rancher might come across. All in all this is a good source for information and I would recomend it any one interested in raising beef cattle for the first time.

Bovine Bible
I don't know how they managed to fit so much information into approximately 300 pages, but they did! This book can take a complete beginner into the world of raising cattle! I have enjoyed many of the other Storey publishing animal raising books as they all seem to complement each other. I recommend this book to anyone who wants to raise cattle--or even as a deterrent to someone who might not be ready for the care and expense that cattle require for care! This book covers so much about behavior, breeds and their weights, pasture and feed ratios, breeding, calving, disease, handling and care!

An AWESOME book that covers a huge amount of material
This book is awesome! It has a great index, and it covers everything from breeding, to calving, to doctoring baby calves, to doctoring adult cattle. And shelter, hay, dietary needs, handling cattle.... Itโs great for people whoโve been around cattle their whole lives or for people just starting out.

Good read
Getting ready to start a herd next spring. Checked this book out from the library, liked it, bought it pre-read for minimal dollars and it is in great shape and I can now highlight like I wanted! Boom!

A book filled with information for the new or old rancher. Format is easy to follow and understandable by anyone interested in this subject. It is now one of my reference library for cattle ranching.

Thorough
Well written. I barely knew one end of a cow from another. Seems to be an excellent beginner's book with very thorough coverage for the newbie. I feel I can start my own herd now with a little help from the local cattleman's association..

Good but...
This book tries to be both an introduction to raising beef cattle and a reference; purposes which are best served by different structures. There is a lot of information with lots of useful tips (e.g. always wear the same clothes in the calving barn and never wash them so you smell the same to the cattle). I have read other books to introduce me to the subject, but skimming the first few chapters a lot of information is presented clearly and concisely. As a reference, I found the index and glossary inadequate, e.g. when I am pulling a calf I don't have facilities or time to research where the fetlock joint is or how to make a double half hitch knot. Also, it is organized but not situationally: here is how to feel inside the cow if the birth is difficult but a few pages later is another section for determining how a calf is malpresented and still later in the chapter is a note to always remember the possibility of twins when feeling inside. Overall a great first book if you are getting into beef cattle (or thinking about it) but maybe not the only book you will need. Just be sure to do your homework by reading the calf chapters weeks before your girls calve so you can annotate and research any terms or techniques you need to know (and have all the equipment and supplies).
