A fantastic book, fast read with very valuable insights . The biggest takeaway was the lesson about how every businesses is about hospitality and the 5% rule that makes good businesses great. Worth reading

hype, don’t buy
this book is a hype. I read several books . this does not brush on any core topics like how to do stuff. how to build culture, winning teams, pricing decisions and other driving factors. i don’t think it will help anyone. wasted my money

Very ordinary
Was quite dissappointed with this book. There are no real insights and the writing is tedious. The advise feel like something you can get off a number of run of mill blogs. Give it a miss.

Not at all useful
It tells what we already know, doesn’t at all explain properly. It is all about his personal achievements and business. Find it difficult to relate with same…. can avoid same……:(

Shallow. Simplistic. Stupid
Albeit successful and albeit writing the book on an important topic - this should never have been a book. His insights would suffices for a LinkedIn post on serving the customers you have well and building up a strong cash position to be able to act when the opportunity arises.

A Masterclass in No-Nonsense Business Wisdom
As a small business owner and lifelong student of leadership, Shut Up and Listen! by Tilman Fertitta was a refreshing, high-impact read that delivered exactly what it promised: raw, real-world advice from someone who’s actually built an empire. Fertitta doesn’t sugarcoat anything, and that’s what makes this book stand out. It’s not just another business memoir, it’s a practical, blunt guide filled with golden nuggets on what it really takes to succeed in business. He breaks down his “Five Percent Rule” with clarity and force, showing how attention to the smallest details can be the difference between winning and losing in competitive markets. The chapters are digestible but packed with insights. Whether he’s talking about hiring the right people, never letting your business get “comfortable,” or always staying focused on the guest experience (a lesson any business can apply), every section brings actionable takeaways. Fertitta’s experience in the hospitality industry gives the book a unique flavor, but the lessons are universal. One of my favorite quotes: “There are no spare customers.” It’s a reminder that every customer interaction counts and it’s something I’ve already implemented with my own team. If you’re looking for a polished corporate playbook, this isn’t it. But if you want tough love from a self-made billionaire who’s built and scaled businesses through grit, timing, and relentless standards, this is the one. Highly recommended for entrepreneurs, managers, and anyone who wants to run a business that actually wins.

Great Book for Business and Life
Great book. It is 100% applicable to business, but about 80% is applicable to many other aspects of life. I’m a frequent visitor to the San Luis Resort and I see Tillman Targets applied everyday. Whether it’s a boss like Mr Schulz or John Paul, a manager like Edwardo or Ozzie or a bartender like Jarred or a waitress like Katelyn they pay attention to every detail to make your visit great. I love his chapter about don’t say NO! His messages in each chapter are succinct and right on target. I’m retired now, but I walked away with many lessons I can apply to my life even now. It’s a quick read, but priceless!
