Can this product be used to test if nickel is in water (i.e. has nickel leached into water from a container it was in)?

I put it directly on several nickel objects and it did not detect nickel.

Will these work with any cotton swab? Or is there a chemical reagent on the included cotton swabs?

As far as I know ow any cotton swab is fine. The chemicals only react with metal

Just water or a damp rag will do the trick if there is any residue.
