Bon Jovi 2020

Purchased the CD for my wife and she loves it. If you like the more recent Bon Jovi songs this is one to add to your collection.

A new prospective on the times we are in now. Thoughts and opinions given to Bon Jovi on the way lives have been affected by this virus. Well written songs a more soft approach but still foot tapping and catchy tunes. I absolutely love this album.

At some point along the way after a couple of duds ["Lost Highway" and "The Circle" if you need me to point fingers] I lost the faith and stopped buying Bon Jovi albums and I wasn't alone as their last album "This House Is Not For Sale" was high on promise debuting at number one on the Billboard charts but low on delivery and within two weeks it had crashed and burned dropping out of the top 100 [I've just bought it new from Amazon for three quid which says a lot!].But we've been promised that this year's model is going to be different, a new mature more socially conscious JBJ and his boys; really, or is it just the same old stadium rocking wolf now in new sheep clothing [or is this the work of an energetic PR guy pushing a 2020 message!]?Well ...... "Limitless", the opener, is a Bon Jovi stadium rocker by numbers albeit turned down from eleven to ten but it's still one that's meant to get the crowd up and swaying, hands in the air, and singing along, let's go "whoa-ah, whoa-oh-ing" [note this assumes that at some point we will allowed to crowd again!].Then comes two songs that were apparently written after the album had been completed and were late additions displacing two of the completed songs. The first of these I don't like, period. "Do What You Can", JBJ's COVID-19 song sounds too much like one of those awful redneck patriotic country rockers sung by someone with a cowboy hat called Butch or Chuck [sorry that doesn't read well, I didn't mean the hat was called Butch or Chuck], this is not for me, slow it down and it might have worked as a ballad but as it stands it's horrible, and what have they done to JBJ's voice? However the second "American Rocking", a slow ballad written in response to the killing of George Floyd and the rise of Black Lives Matter is a beautiful song that's sending shivers down my back as I listen, and with JBJ's harmonica and the "stay alive..." chorus this is encroaching on their New Jersey neighbour Springsteen's territory, it's brilliant, this is mature socially conscious music for grown-ups."Beautiful Drug" opens with a stadium rousing set of "whoa's" which reappear throughout, it's standard BJ fare with a nice guitar solo, it's not exciting and were it not for JBJ's voice this could be late period U2.With its acoustic guitar "Story of Love" is very different, and for six minutes I kept expecting it to turn into a power ballad but it doesn't, although the piano and electric guitar do get to takeover eventually. I really don't know what I think about this, it has the feel of Peter Starstedt's "Where Do You Go To My Lovely" until the electric guitar kicks in, and the whole thing sounds like the title track to a 1960's movie set on the French Riviera, it just doesn't belong here and perhaps should have been one of those dropped when the two newer songs were added.Normality returns though with "Let It Rain", although perhaps there is nothing normal about "2020" [I meant the album but the sentiment could apply to pretty much anything in 20201]. So this is more like what I had expected from a more mature Bon Jovi, it still has their structural hallmarks, it's still big but somehow it's more heads-up.For a moment as "Lower The Flag" started I thought I was listening to the Boss or perhaps Steve Earle. This is a heartland spine-tingler and deals with America's gun laws/mass-killing problem, and as the roll of dishonour is read out I have my head in my hands and tears in my eyes, if this isn't the best song JBJ has ever written it's the most moving [even more so than "August 7"].The eerie guitar that opens "Blood In The Water" borrows from Dave Gilmour and is the perfect way to follow "Lower The Flag", any bombast would have been crass. This song about migrants maintains the mood set by "Lower The Flag", it's a beautiful song with a wonderful guitar solo, it's excellent and another example of the more mature sound of 2020 Bon Jovi.But after the thoughtful pairing of "Lower The Flag" and "Blood In The Water" "Brother In Arms" takes the band back to their natural hunting ground, the stadium rocker. Again this is standard Bon Jovi fare, but once more it's less bombastic than it would have been in their earlier years.Finally "Unbroken" a hard-edged ballad about PTSD and the daily struggles that traumatised vets face, another thoughtful song that deals with another real issue facing American society in 2020, and despite its who-ahs I don't expect it to be a live number, at least not in the USA, it will be way too honest for many.So is this a new mature more socially conscious Bon Jovi? Yes I think it is, I like most of the tracks with the exception of "Do What You Can" and I'm still not sure about "Story of Love". The rockers are more turned-down heads-up and more complex than they were twenty-five years ago, and the ballads are stronger with real messages about real social issues; and the pairing of "Lower The Flag" and "Blood In The Water" is probably the most thoughtful eleven minutes on any Bon Jovi album. I for one am not missing Richie Sambora and am enjoying Phil X's solos.So maybe the boys have finally matured or perhaps without the Sambora influence there's been a change to the established order and that's why this feels more like JBJ's "Destination Anywhere" than previous BJ albums, perhaps it should have been a JBJ solo album? Who knows, but this is the best Bon Jovi studio album this millennium [so far at least].Five stars if I skip "Do What You Can", but only four stars with it.

Love the music, as someone else reviewed "don't judge on first listen" the songs are haunting and grow on you. Love, love, love Jon Bon Jovi. Shame the case was broken and fell apart as opened, disc is OK tho.

Great album. Bought as an double LP - great pressing and well packaged. On gold vinyl which is an unexpected bonus. Stand out track to me is "Blood in the water" but a lot of good tunes on here. Don't agree with a lot of negative reviews - love the old Bon Jovi albums but don't want them to just chuck out Slippery When Wet clones. They've mellowed and matured over the years and we like their recent albums as well/much as their old ones. (And they still rock in concert!) Worth the wait and recommended.

Wasn't for me but as a present for someone who is a fan of the band. There are some good rock songs on here - Do What You Can, American Reckoning, Lower the Flag, Unbroken - but also some predicable and boring lighter tracks. So it's about half and half, really. I'd describe it as pop rock mostly. Shipped safely but there's a small crack in the outer CD case.

Bon Jovi remains one of the few groups from the era of 80's metal still making music-and I've gotta say they're still doing a great job. Some of their more recent albums even rival those early classics in my opinion.2020 resonates with me not only for the catchy melodies, but for the topics it covers-delving into everything from the current Coronavirus climate & George Floyd tragedy to mass shootings and so much more. I'm not gonna lie, I got a little choked up when Dayton, Ohio is referenced among the many mass shootings named in one of the songs, since that one in particular is close to home for me.This won't be to everyone's liking as it is a much more mellow Bon Jovi than we've seen yet, but it appealed to me in a different way and-given what a complicated year 2020 has been, I think someone needed to put something out like this. The song "American Reckoning" alone makes this worth a purchase.Another A+ Bon Jovi release in my book.

Lange schon habe ich keine Rezension mehr verfasst aber hier ist es mal wieder an der Zeit.Bon Jovi. Mittlerweile 58 Lenze "jung" begleitet mich seit meiner frühesten Kindheit. Soll heißen seit "Slippery when wet". Seitdem bin ich ein "Fan". Der Höhepunkt wurde beim besagten "These Days" Album erreicht. Ein bis heute standhaftes Rock-Album mit epischen Songs. Die Konzerte waren lang und episch.Danach wurde es für mich zumindest etwas ruhiger. Durchschnittliche Alben gaben sich die Klinke in die Hand und Querelen in der Band (Richie sic!) trugen nicht dazu bei die Flamme wieder auflodern zu lassen...Eher zufällig bekam ich im Radio mit dass ein neues Album veröffentlich wird und so hörte ich mal rein. "Limitless" hat mich noch nicht vom Hocker gehauen und so war die Erwartungshaltung mal wieder eher gering.Der erste Song der mich gepackt hat war "Story of Love". Den versteht man aber nur in Gänze, wenn man selbst Kinder hat. Von da an gab kein Halten mehr. Das ich würde fast schon sagen epische Video zu "Do what you can" hat mir quasi den Rest gegeben. Ich finde nicht alle Songs herausragend aber es sind so viele wie lange nicht mehr. "Blood in the Water", "Lower the flag", "Unbroken" sind aber auf einem Niveau das man als langjähriger Begleiter schon nicht mehr für möglich gehalten hat.Es sind Balladen und Rocksongs gleichermaßen vertreten aber sie alle eint ein politischer und gesellschaftlicher Tenor. Und zum ersten Mal spielt das Thema Familie eine entscheidende Rolle. Das erzeugt insgesamt einen selten erlebten Tiefgang in seinen Songs. Gepaart mit eingängigen Melodien und den auch inhaltlich ansprechenden Texten ist das Album für mich eine absolute Überraschung geworden.Wer will kann sich die kompletten Lyric-Videos auf YouTube ansehen was ich ebenfalls einen coolen Move finde.2020 wird uns allen als ein besonderes, nie dagewesenes Jahr in Erinnerung bleiben. Nun werde ich das Jahr auch immer mit diesem für mich außergewöhnlichen Album in Verbindung bringen. Bon Jovi schafft es den Zeitkolorit perfekt einzufangen und so extreme Emotionen auszulösen.Für mich scheint es fast als hätte die Krise nochmal die Altstars auf den Plan gerufen um das Beste aus ihnen rauszuholen (Springsteen Incoming...). Chapeau für dieses Comeback, ich ziehe meinen Hut!
