Is there a way to change the darkness of the screen? Like on a calculator? The screen is very hard to read

On page 5 of the manual it said, "Turn MathShark on & press HELP during the opening screen. Use the + & - buttons to adjust contrast for maximum visibility." My contrast level is 1.

Can 1 child play alone ? must he be able to read ?

The child has to read the numbers and the plus sign, minus sign, etc. My child played with me sitting next to her, or how else would you know he or she was making progress. Parents, in my opinion have to be involved, in helping their child with math, reading, or whatever the subject is he or she is struggling with. Isn't that what parenting is all about, guiding, helping ?????????

How do I open the battery case? A normal screwdriver doesn't seem to fit.

A normal screwdriver won't fit. I use a small screwdriver that I purchased for little projects like these. (This would be like the one you can uses for towel racks hanging in wall) Hope that helps!
