Is the design on both top and bottom flat sides?

Would these work well for third graders or are they meant for smaller kids?

I bought them for my toddler however they are big enough and thick enough for any age to sit comfortably. My whole family uses them during story time with the little one so they would work great for that age. Also the bottoms are rubber so they have great durability.

Will they fit an adult butt? Lol

They will fit baby that got back, they are made with a quality foam, but I wouldn't sit on them regularly for a long period of time.
