Expensive, but will make you realise your knives weren't sharp before!
For a long time I've been using the "drag-through" style of sharpener on my kitchen knives. Some of them are quite expensive, and I've noticed two bad things happening: 1. the initial edge grind that they came with is disappearing or has gone, leaving a fairly thick edge that doesn't really sharpen 2. where these is an edge, it is ragged and catchy. I did quite a lot of research (meaning: I watched a lot of videos!) and initially I thought I'd get a whetstone (an oilstone or a waterstone more specifically), but I found that the good ones are expensive, you need several, and they wear away and have to be "dressed" with a special tool which wears them away further. As I'm not a knife-maker or a professional sushi chef, I looked for an alternative, and found diamond stones. These are much tougher in that they don't really wear away (although they do gradually lose their diamond coat over a long time), but they also have the advantage that they're more rigid and you only need a single (multi-grit) one to get your knives to a very good level of sharpness. (Knife-sharpening specialists will probably suggest you also get a leather strop and some grinding paste to finish off the edge, but I haven't done that and the sharpness I get to is still excellent). There are several good "how to use" and "how to choose" review videos of this Sharpal product online. It actually comes in two sizes and I bought the smaller; it works fine, but I would advise you to strongly consider getting the larger one if you have chef knives to sharpen, for a few extra pounds, as it will be a little easier. This one is fine, nevertheless, once you've mastered the technique, which took me a few hours at most. The stone comes in a very strong, quality storage box which is also the non-slip stand to hold it in when sharpening, having a large soft rubber base. It also has a magnetic angle gauge that you can attach to your knife to help you maintain any of 4 common blade angles. The instructions are fairly clear, although I would recommend looking for a tutorial video to really get the idea of how to sharpen. My other tip would be to start on a knife you're not too worried about making a bit of a mess of initially (although you will be able to adjust it once you get the hang of the technique!) Now that I am fairly practiced at using the Sharpal diamond stone, I can say that it is very fast to take even a blunt edge to a well-ground angle, and then to a razor-sharp, moderately polished cutting edge. You can probably do that in 10-15 minutes. With whetstones (which I've used in the past), you'll need several, and it would likely take 3 times as long. Remember to wash and dry the diamond stone to clean it occasionally; you can use it wet or dry. Wet will give you a satisfying metallic slurry very quickly as you use it! My tip here is to be careful not to rub your fingertips repeatedly on the stone as you sharpen, because you will literally remove your fingerprints! I've now sharpened most of my knives to better-than-new edges, and I've also sharpened scissors pretty effectively. Again, this is using the smaller model, and it would be even easier with the larger one. Overall, this has been a great purchase, and has really improved the safety and sharpness of my kitchen knives, and also improved my enjoyment of cooking because it has eased and increased the speed of my chopping and preparation significantly! I really recommend this Sharpal stone; give it a little time to learn how to use it, and you'll be cutting paper-thin slices of tomato just like they do in online videos to demonstrate how sharp your knives are!

Very easy to use
I received this today, I am particularly bad at getting any sort of an edge on my pocket knife and have tried a few options. Having seen this sharpening stone, read the reviews and the fact that it was in the sale I decided to try it. Within 5 minutes I had a really sharp knife again. The diamond sharpener is solid, the carry box contains it and the angle guide makes getting the best edge easy Try it, you won't regret it

Well worth its money
Do not make the mistake that I made by trying one of the cheap far east ‘pull through’ sharpeners. They do not work and will ruin your knives! If you inspect the blade after using one of these cheap sharpeners you will notice parts of the blade become serrated and these devices just make it worse! So, I bought this SHARPAL diamond set (Coarse and Fine) to try to repair my expensive knives and they work like a dream. You do not need to use any lubricant but you do need to clean the stone with water and a nylon scrubbing brush when you have finished. If you do not do this as some reviews state the stone becomes discoloured – simply rust forming from debris left from the sharpening process. Dry the stone before putting it in its very handy case which also acts as a non-slip base for sharpening. It took me a bit of time with the coarse stone to remove the earlier damage but a few passes on the fine stone and the knife was as good as new. Highly recommended.

Really good value for money
This diamond whetstone good quality, and good value for money. It seems to have good and consistent diamond size, and good bonding of the diamonds to the base. The whetstone seems to be flat, and you will have an enormous problem changing that. The base is a good weight, and the box makes a good, stable platform for the whetstone when sharpening. With care this should last a lifetime. The angle guide is of limited use. With practice you will be able to get shaving-sharp edges on most blades or tools.

Compact and convenient
Not too bad. Does the job. It definitely gets an edge back on your knife. I use it along with a diamond steel in a commercial kitchen. Very convenient not having to soak it first. I would say that the magnet on the guide block could be stronger though as it moves quite easily and the slip resistance isn't great on a stainless steel bench. The size is also convenient, it fits into my knife box and ready to carry on it's compact case. It has got a bit of weight to it.

I make many reviews & say it as it is Factual!
Having served a 5 year apprenticeship in a joiners shop I feel my comments could be of use. I have a old oil stone (not used anymore & a 8 year old diamond stone that I use possibly three times per year as I’m not in the building trade anymore. I read some of the reviews both good & unbelievable “the ones that said these diamond stones where no good” but thought is shove the boat out and purchased this diamond stone. I don’t do words like WOW but that’s exactly what I think of this. It sharpened 3 plane blades & two chisels in a third of the time to a high level @ 25 deg you can do them at 30 deg but I’m a sharpening sado. If I was to split hairs I’d suggest although I can sharpen tools free hand, the orange guide supplied with the stone is only a guide to give you a rough idea of the angle required but for perhaps novices or weekend DIY guys I’d suggest buying a Record guide that’s sets & keeps the correct angle for you as the little wheel rides along the stone - which I use for perfect results every time. For me this stone (kit) is really top notch quality the case, the stone, & guide. I’m really impressed it’s made my life or my tools really worth while having - in fact my Best Buy this year. Buy the little honing guide Record I believe for 1st class results - use the lower number on the stone for general sharpening & the higher number for possibly honing knifes etc although I use both sides starting with the rougher side finishing off with the finer side. The Trend lapping fluid also helps. It’s not cheap but trust me it works fantastically well.

Solid working knife sharpener
Great way to get into diamond sharpeners is a nice transition away from those messy typical aluminum oxide wet stones. This one is built very solid and has a lovely case if you need to travel with it plus the edge guide is a great benefit when you’re learning how to effectively sharpen.
