Good
This is a good Printer/MF device, it excels at everything it does, I gave it 5 stars for what it does. If there were 1/2 stars I would have given it 4.5 for some minor omissions. Your choice depends on what features you want/need. Canon based lasers (hp still uses their engines) last forever because when you discard the Toner cartridge you are discarding the drum and other parts that are likely to fail. Then again when you buy a printer for around $100 this does not matter as much as when they used to cost $1000s or at least many hundreds of dollars. This is a very small well made printer. 10x10x14. In my case this was one of the deciding factors. My wife wanted something as small as possible. Most other printers/MF devices are closer to 20x20x20. Canon themselves make a D420 which has better specs and is currently selling for a few dollars less, but is much larger. Silly Canon did not include the USB Cable. I had one. But unless you buy them from Amazon or monoprice you end up paying silly prices for them (should only be a few dollars). The manual is HTML you can pull up out of a browser. On the PC it installs as a program. As the manual is HTML mac users can copy the manual folder to there computer and open it in their web browser of your choice. I tried firefox first, worked well. Mac Drivers and current pc drivers are on line. The HTML manual is much clearer then the nicely printed setup and quick instructions that are bit to brief for many. Because this MF/printer is so small it good live on almost any desk or near by spot without taking over. If you want wireless printing capability you need to plug the printer into a router, airport express, etc. that supports turning USB devices into wireless network printers. I had routers with the capability so this did not bother me. Scanning always has to be done locally anyway. But network scanning is not an option even with a router that makes the printing functionality wireless (that true for all devices jacked into routers). Really though scanning has to be done locally anyway to feed the scanner. Most of you already know low end laser only come with starter toner cartridges that print in the 400-800 page range. This one is no different. Controls. I would have preferred better controls. Making a copy is a one button affair. But if you want to change settings you have to do a little studying. The buttons are nice and large, there just not enough of them. There functionality toggles. The printers display is a single large bright one character alpha/number display that tells you what your doing. What was really needed was display with at least 10-15 characters and a few more buttons to make the other functionality easier until your familiar. Be careful unpacking its fully assembled but with all the plastic tabs that have to be removed. You have take out the toner cartridge and remove the tabs gently from the printer and then replace the toner cartridge to get the protective tabs out. Over all this is a really good printer and a great value. Some things like the lack of an Auto Document feeder will make the scanner more reliable. Choose this printer if you want a really good compact reliable MF device. I also should point out if you look at reviews this is one of the consistently highest rated device. The only neg review came from someone who had a driver issue on a mac resolved it and never updated his or her rating. There are plenty of mac and cross platform users are using it with out issue. The person that had the issue came before Canon updated their printer drivers.

Nice little printer...great price, great quality!
I'm using this for our different types of computers, which include both Macs and PCs. I was concerned about whether or not it would print Postscript files, but it seems to do a good job on everything I've sent to it. The blacks are very solid, and print quality seems to be good! I wish the wireless version was in my budget, but I'll probably hook this one up to my iMac and share the printer on the wireless network. For the price, I cannot complain. It also acts as a scanner and copier. Truly mult-function. Also, for any artists or electronics designers out there...I'm using this with a product called PnP Blue. You print your jewelry design or circuit board design onto the PnP Blue...it must be a LASER print...and then you iron it onto metal or circuit board material. It blocks off areas of the metal, then you can use Ferric Chloride (available on Amazon or at Radio Shack) to etch the metal. There are many tutorials on the web. This laser printer works GREAT for this type of project. [...] has the PnP Blue paper, and you can get Ferric Chloride here: MG Chemicals 415 Ferric Chloride Liquid Here's a great DVD on how to do it! Metalsmith Essentials: Jewelry Etching on Copper

cute little laser printer, works with Macs but there are no instructions!
First I will say that this is a GREAT LOOKING little printer/scanner, I chose it because it is compact and nicely designed, and I thought an inexpensive laser printer would best fit my needs. My printer is mostly idle so inkjets dry out on me, and when I do need to print something it's generally text. Color is a luxury I do not really need. The print quality on text from this Canon is very, very good; much better than similar priced inkjets. Setup was very easy, but if you use a Mac, you are on your own. I will give Mac users a quick rundown on what they need to do: Just follow the instructions until you get to "Installing the Drivers Software (for Windows)". Mac users are on their own from here on. There is an "e-manual" for windows that I did not bother trying to download. You need to go to Canon's website and download 2 drivers, one for the printer and one for the scanner. The downloads contain folders called "guide", but they contain the Windows guide. Install the drivers first, then connect the printer cable (which you already have or remembered to buy), then open a document to print. On the print window you will need to add a printer, the Canon will show on the list if it's plugged in, and choose the model number for 'print using'. For scanning, if you want a printed copy, place the item on the scanner bed, press the right (green) button on the printer, use the up/down buttons to change number of copies, then the green button again. To scan to the computer look in your Applications folder. If you installed the scanner driver there will be a new application called "Image Capture". Drag it to your dock if you like. If you click "show details" there are settings here to adjust scan type, file type, etc. I would have rated this 5 stars if Canon had acknowledged Mac users, it is marketed as being compatible but after that they ignore us. I don't understand why some reviewers complain about it lacking functions that it does not claim to have, this is a very basic, very inexpensive, very cute laser printer/scanner. Or they complain about paper jams (what kind of paper did you use, what condition was it in, how much did you put in the tray....) I paid $90 for this printer and am very very pleased with it. Prices on Amazon change daily so keep checking for the best deal. Update 6/12: I have used the scanner quite a bit now and the quality and ease of use are excellent! Almost worth bumping my rating to 5 stars for the crisp color images I get from scans on this little b/w printer! And I have not yet experienced a jam. .

Good Buy for a 80 dollar piece.
This printer works great. Does job very well. It prints the first page real fast. Easy set up for scanning and printing. Received without any damaged parts. I haven't got a chance to use it a lot but I believe it will keep the level intact. It comes with toner which is good for few copies. You need to buy additional toner plus a ream of paper. There are lot of good deals you can found on Amazon for this printer toner. Do not buy the one that cost you $79.00. I am still wondering that how come a toner price is almost same as printer price. Anyways this printer is real good buy for a Home use. It does only Copy, scan and print. Scanning is only done using glass feeder. There is no ADF for copying and scanning.

Peeved!!
It may be an excellent printer, but I cannot tell. I unwrapped it. Installed the software. However, when it was time to attach the USB cable, I hit a glitch. One wasn't included, and I don't have one. I really believe that all essential pieces should be included in the purchase. It is just as easy to return this printer to the store than it is for me to go and buy a cable.

The Perfect home-office printer!
This printer is, in one word, amazing. It's really small in terms of a laser all-in-one, and it easily fits onto my shelf. This printer is really budget friendly and fits the need for those who need occasional (or even frequent) printing and copying but don't need a full sized printer. In fact, I will call this a great substitute for a home-level all-in-one inkjet! Pros: -Tiny footprint. Takes up very little space. I literally places it in my bookshelf and has no problem using it. -Super fast printing. This printer actually is faster than the HP Laserjet used in my office, especially on the first two pages. It's very efficient for people like me who usually prints less than 3-4 pages. The speed cannot be compared to inkjet printers (a.k.a "home/small office printers") since it's laser. -Easy operation. In fact, you don't need to read the manual to use the basic features of this machine. Pretty much plug and play. Printing and scanning both work out of the box. Copying is easier: just slip in the original, and press start. That's it, no menus to go through, no options to ponder around. The image comes out crisp and clear. -Useful features for personal users. Basic copier functions like zooming and darkness are right on the front panel. There are even other helpful tools like page merging and ID copying (front-and-back on one sheet). Great for those occasions when you need copies of your ID or passport for paperwork. -Toner volume. Although the printer comes with a reduced volume toner, it still can print a whole lot before running out. Moreover, this is one of those printers that does not give you the annoying "low toner" warning, which means it won't bother you with fake warnings nor will it have problems with refilled/compatible cartridges. -Never dries out. After breaking several inkjet all-in-ones, I feel this printer is the perfect one if you don't print that much altogether. Almost all inkjets are designed cheap for really basic use, but once you open up the cartridge, the liquid ink will start drying out if you don't use it often. Once it jams the nozzle, you'll have to replace the cartridge (sometimes with a nozzle sold separately) - almost half the price of another printer. And you will only know it's jammed when you start printing and get no output. This laser printer totally solves the problem since it uses dry ink; when the print is uneven, all you have to do is take the cart out and shake it, and voila. Cons: (the details won't hurt that much, though) -Noise level. I know all printers are noisy when they print, but this one sounds louder than the inkjets and more like a commercial printer. Maybe this is due to its small size, and there's little noise apprehension built in it? -No duplex. I don't mind not having duplex since I can always manually print double sided. However, this printer makes the whole process painful because the only paper tray acts like the "manual feed" tray in most other printers - it prints on the "top" side that the paper was fed in, and outputs them face down, first one on bottom. This is perfect if you want to staple them right after because they are already in the right order (as oppose to inkjets which mostly stacks paper in reverse order, unless you print in reverse). The printer's driver does not support a "reverse order" option, so unless the software I'm using (no, MS Word depends on the printer driver to do it) supports it natively, I'll have to manually reverse the order of the paper before feeding them back in to do the other side. This was really annoying when I had to print a few copies of a large document. -Rough paper handling. Most laser printers will cause a little bend in the printed paper, which is fine. However, this printer seems to run on a thin stripe of transport that the printed paper bend as much as a salad bowl. When printing double sided manually, the printed page would be VERY hard to feed back in the tray, since the sides are bending up. Also, it's hard to hole punch a freshly printed document because of the bending; It's just really hard to get it in there. -Flimsy tray. The paper "holder" is actually only 2 inches wide and really thin when fully extended. If it's placed at a bodily height, I would definitely expect someone to bump into it, get a bruise, and break the holder in half. Luckily I stow mine on the high end of a bookcase, so it shouldn't matter. Plus, you can always remember to tuck it back in after use. In essence, this printer is good enough for home and personal use. Don't get this if you are, say, a designer or just picture maniac because it doesn't print colors, and the grayscale are not that great if you're printing colors "as is". However, it's more than enough for most people, who use their printer once in a while, and especially students. Most importantly, it won't break the bank - You don't have to keep buying new cartridges each time the old ones dry out, and each one can theoretically print at least a few thousand pages.

Why did I wait so long to get a laser printer?!
This prints b&w only so, if you don't need color printing or already have a color printer but find you need a fast, reliable printer for the other stuff, this is just fantastic. It was easy to set up, it is easy to use. I can scan b/w and color as different file types on my computer (pdf, jpeg, etc). It prints fast (compared to inkjet color printers). It will be a long time before I need to change the ink cartridge. The edges of the paper curl a little after it prints (because of the heat - it only heats when it's printing), but if you lay it flat for a little while, the slight curl removes itself. There's no wifi, but I just plug in the usb cable when I want to print. I did a lot of research of laser printers and I believe this was the best deal for the money for my needs (I do not need color printing, but I do need color scanning; I don't need wifi printing.)

Infamously known defect across the internet as it seems
After two decades of shopping on Amazon, this is my first Amazon return ever. Followed install instructions to the tee and when I first booted it up, it started an automatic print test and got jammed. After carefully removing and taking care of the jam, I tried to test it again but it was stuck on the blinking orange warning icon. I've tried cleaning the contacts and dusts/particles that I could see, carefully making sure not to touch anything. Upon a decent amount of research, I found that this was a severe issue that happened with a lot of this model and the only way to really get it back into working shape was to take the entire printer apart(wiring as well) and cleaning out and replugging all the wires back into their ports. I wouldn't mind doing such a thing if the printer were a year or so old but coming straight out of the box? A customer should not have to do this level of technical repairs on a new item. I'm sure the other printers out there are fine and I just received a defect but I figured to write this review up in case anyone else comes across this issue.

Good Canon MFP.
Great simple tool for small office work, loading the software can be a little tricky but the Windows install recognizes this Canon printer and will help install the driver/
