Does this need speakers in addition to the unit? Or can I just plug it in to the wall socket and press play?

This is like a turntable. You still need an Amplifier & Speakers to hear the CD's.

The carosel will not rotate, is locked up. Just makes a loud huming sound. Any ideas?

Belt fell off and is probably too old and stretched. A new belt needs to be installed. The humming is the carousel drive motor spinning with no belt.

Remove the cover of the unit. It's easily done. Nothing is attached to the cover. Once the cover is removed all the cds are accesssible. The door is to keep the dust out. You can manually open it.
