UDM-PRO

I've had a couple of mesh WiFi products in the past, but I decided to improve my network a little so thought it would be good to move towards the managed switch network setup. I considered UniFi amongst other managed WiFi brands, and given I couldn't find a great deal between them, so opted for this UniFi product. So far the device has been great. I did have a few minor issues during setup in that the WiFi speeds were very poor - but following a factory reset, everything worked as expected. I have around 80 devices connected to my network including the various IoT and the UDM Pro system resources barely registers. Overall a great device, the only thing it lacks is PoE on the ports, however this is clear from the product description so I can't mark the device down for that. Just one word of caution, the device provides NVR capability for CCTV however this is for UniFi branded cameras only. Again, it does state this in the various pages but I had missed it.

Great router. Turned my adsl2 router into a dumb modem (pass through mode only). Udm does all the lifting. Make sure you sign into this with a unifi online account for remote monitoring before you set it up. If you opt for a local account you'll have to reset it to bring it under your unifi account later. Works well with their unifi ups which is silly cheap.

Great UniFi quality, superb link speeds, well packed and protected well for shipping, the small touch screen display is a game changer! Really handy for checking metrics and displaying data, I have it powering a multitude of devices around my home a blend of POE and data, once you purchase one UniFi product you will be hooked, its like the ultimate networking eco system.

Highly recommended when deploying in a big house. We have 4 access points but also make use of VPNs, blocking certain apps for the kids and also intrusion prevention. I think ubiquiti get the balance right but you will need to be an enthusiast to set it up correctly.

I don't know if the udm pro that was sent was a return but the power cord sent is not the correct one, its like one that goes into a power brick for a laptop. That aside, it was a toss up between this and a pfsense and what would fill my requirements. I have 2x 1Gbps isp connections and wanted 10Gbps between router and switches. So basically I got this as I usually stuck with netgear and cisco gear before (netgear been under the cisco umbrella). So I changed things up abit and went for unifi UDM Pro, so far I am only playing with it on 1 isp connection to see what it can and can not do and I am happy with my purchase so far apart from after updating it I had to restart the unify service via ssh, the next day did the same but now seems to have sorted itself out. I am looking at access points at the moment and the switches they provide to upgrade mine, its not clear what is L2 or L3 switches in the descriptions of the switches. These are a great producer grade equipment, I say prosumer because they have simplified the UI so it's a no brainer how to setup your network. I don't usually put all my eggs in one basket and my gut tells me not to but they seem like a great line of products with reputation of good things along as your equipment is in warranty lol (reading long term reviews). Any how -1 star for sending the wrong power lead.

Excellent value for money, The udm pro comes with enterprise level features without the yearly licencing costs like cisco meraki etc. I will be rack mounting in the future but for now its just as usuable sitting on my table and it looks great. Alongside the ability to view everybit of traffic thats passing through the network and what percentage of traffic that makes up is The IDS/IPS feature which is one of my favourite which i run on the medium setting and the CPU doesnt seem to break 20% useage. GEO IP Filtering is also a fantastic feature. the controller also automatically detects and builds out your network topology for you which makes a great visual medium to assess/troubleshoot network issues. There is so much more that you can do with this but those are my main highlights as i dont have the use for cameras etc so i cant comment on unifi protect etc. NOTE - This does not have built in wifi so you need to by APs seperately if needed and there is no POE ports. these are available on the SE version though.

Bought this to stop my use of AWS as the controller. The AWS hosted controller was reliable and always on but costing £10 a month for all the logging etc. So I bought this, which will pay for itself ina couple of years…. Easy to install, just follow the instructions. Easy to use, just leave it in your rack. Easy to setup or monitor with the browser or app. BUT…. It’s reliable at acting as a gateway but the remote access isn’t always working (google it!). Also the UDM Pro has twice decided to not even allow local access via browser or app or any other way! Finally on restarting it tells me it needs emergency recovery which will wipe the system config. Luckily it’s back up and running after unplug/re plug but its still telling me the Unifi console needs to be restarted (which runs the nifty touchscreen). I can’t trust this device to act as the network controller if I can’t reliably access it. I’ve opened a support ticket… let’s see what happens…

I have used Unifi equipment for our home and home-based business for over five years and have been delighted with the experience since day one. The Dream Machine Pro is a fantastic upgrade from my previous Gateway Pro setup and has allowed me to upgrade to 2.5Gbps networking throughout the home and office, doubling the throughput and stability of our network. Anyone wanting to make the jump from the standard ISP all in one box should certainly consider looking at investing in Ubiquiti's kit - just remember, you'll need to add an access point if you intend to use WiFi as well as wired connections.

I have had issues with my wifi in our house for some time now. I spoke to our IT crowd at work and they told me to go with Ubiquity. It seemed pricey but they were insistent it was the way to go. MAN I wish I did this earlier. The products are so well made, they’re clean and very easy to setup. The Dreammachine Pro is all set up within minutes from your phone via Bluetooth. The analytics are great from the machine and the wireless AP’s are fantastic. Everything can be managed from either your phone or the super smooth web gui. You can even turn the annoying LED’s off on the AP’s via the same gui. The WAN connection to your isp is done within 30 seconds and the wifi is back up in a similar timeframe. The only Con I consider is the price. They are expensive but they are worth it.

Configurado en 1,5 minutos, es cierto que llevo tiempo con Unifi, pero es muy sencillo. Conectado con Movistar en modo neutro y va que da gusto. El firewall a tope no da problemas de cuello de botella, conectado con el 10G SFP+ y no falla.

Il prodotto va oltre ogni più rosea aspettativa. È estremamente professionale, versatile, ricco di funzionalità, semplice da gestire! Mi occupo di prodotti di networking da anni e per mia colpa mi è sfuggito questo meraviglioso device. Difficile per non dire impossibile tornare indietro o preferire altro. Ich nutze seit Jahren zahlreiche Komponenten aus dem Unifi Portfolio, anfangs waren nur zwei Access Points, mittlerweile sind es drei U6-Pro, zwei AC Mesh, sowie einige Switche. Zu Beginn habe ich den Controller noch auf der NAS lediglich als Container gehostet, bevor ich auf den Cloud-Key Gen 2 und ein Security umgestiegen bin. Da letzteres nicht den gewünschten Durchsatz für die DSL-Verbindung lieferte, habe ich mir schließlich die Dream Machine Pro gegönnt und diese jetzt seit mehreren Jahren in Nutzung. Sie funktioniert seitdem tadellos und hat bisher nur wenige Probleme bereitet. Darüber hinaus ist der Funktionsumfang in den letzten Jahren stetig vergrößert worden, weshalb ich den Kauf erst recht nicht bereut habe. Was die Dream Machine im Detail auszeichnet und wo es noch Optimierungspotential gibt, dazu nun mehr: Die Vor-/Nachteile in der Zusammenfassung vorab: + sehr gute Verarbeitung + integrierte HDD-Aufnahme für Speicherung von Kamera Aufnahmen + praktisches Display für wesentliche Betriebsinformationen + ausreichende Performance auch für schnellere Internetverbindungen + Controller Oberfläche reagiert verzugslos + zwei SFP Ports + moderate Wärmeentwicklung im Betrieb + Wireguard und Teleport Integration + integrierte Firewall inkl. Packet Inspection + gute App Steuerung O kein PoE O nur proprietärer Anschluss für USB-Backup O nur 1 gbps Backplane für den integrierten Switch - Gelegentliche Abstürze der Network App bei Nutzung der automatischen Backup Funktionalität Die Dream Machine Pro im Detail: --------------------------------------------- Geliefert wird die Dream Machine Pro in einem flachen Karton, in dem sich neben dem Device nur noch ein Kaltgerätekabel, Montagematerial für das 19“ Rack und eine kurze Anleitung befinden. Die Dream Machine Pro wirkt wie andere Geräte aus dem Hause Ubiquiti sehr solide und gut verarbeitet. Das Gehäuse besteht aus Alu und weist keinerlei Verarbeitungsfehler auf. Auf der Front finden sich insgesamt 8 Gigabit Ethernet Ports, die, anders als bei der SE Edition, keine PoE Funktionalität besitzen. Außerdem sollte man beachten, dieser 8 Port Switch zwar einen 16 gbps non-blocking Durchsatz besitzt, die Backplane aber nur 1 gpbs an Traffic durchlässt. Zu Uplink lastige Geräte sollte man daher nicht an dem Switch betreiben. Zusätzlich zu den 8 Gigabit Ports sind ein RJ45 1 gpbs WAN Port sowie zwei 10 gpbs fähige SFP Ports im Gerät integriert. Einer dieser Ports kann als zweiter WAN Port genutzt werden, der andere dient in erster Linie zur Verbindung zu anderen Switchen. Die beiden WAN Ports können mittlerweile auch als Failover Option genutzt werden. Neben den Netzwerkports ist eine Klappe zu finden, hinter der die Aufnahme für eine 3,5“ Festplatte sitzt. Diese kann als Speichermedium für angeschlossene Ubiquiti Kameras genutzt werden. Da ich bisher auf Kameras anderer Hersteller setze, nutze ich diese Möglichkeit bei meiner Dream Machine nicht. Links neben dem Schacht ist ein kleines Display zu finden, dass auch bei den Gen 2 Switchen des Herstellers verbaut wird. Es handelt sich um einen kleinen Touchscreen, über den wesentliche Betriebsparameter angezeigt werden können. Außerdem wird darüber eine Art QR Code angezeigt, mit dem das AR Feature in der App aktiviert werden kann. Ein ziemlich cooles Feature. Auf der Rückseite befindet sich neben dem üblichen Kaltgeräteanschluss noch ein proprietärer Anschluss für die hauseigene USV. Dies auch die Professional und Enterprise Switches des Herstellers. Weitere Anschlüsse finden sich am Gerät nicht. Die Montage der Dream Machine Pro im Rack funktioniert mit den mitgelieferten Montagewinkeln problemlos. Die dafür benötigten vier Käfigmuttern gehören zum Lieferumfang. Aufgrund des nicht gerade geringen Gewichtes von 3,9 Kilogramm habe ich die Dream Machine aber an den hinteren Montageschienen des Racks nochmals abgestützt. Für die Inbetriebnahme muss ein Konto bei Ubiquiti angelegt werden. Es existiert aber auch eine Anleitung, wie man ohne Zwangskonto die Dream Machine einrichten kann. Nach der Ersteinrichtung stehen auf der Dream Machine Pro verschiedene Applikationen zur Verfügung, die einzeln konfiguriert werden können/müssen: Network, Protect, Access, Talk, Connect und UID. Sofern eine der Apps nicht genutzt wird, kann sie deaktiviert werden. Ich nutze aktuell nur die Network App. Die Network App ist der Controller für die Netzwerkkomponenten des Herstellers. In der App lassen sich WLANs konfigurieren, VLANs einrichten, die Firewall konfigurieren und vieles mehr. Im Netz finden sich genug Infos über die Möglichkeiten und Grenzen des Systems, hier auf alles einzugehen würde den Rahmen sprengen. Glücklicherweise lassen sich die Konfigurationen exportieren und auch auf anderen Unifi Controllern importieren, sodass ich in meinem Fall die Konfiguration des Cloud Keys direkt übernehmen konnte. Positiv ist anzumerken, dass Unifi die Dream Machine in den letzten Jahren kontinuierlich weiterentwickelt und mit neuen Funktionen ausgestattet hat. So ist die Oberfläche komplett überarbeitet und moderner gestaltet worden. Während ich zu Beginn immer noch die alte Oberfläche bevorzugt habe, finde ich mittlerweile das neue Design und die neuen Features im neuen Cockpit besser. Darüber hinaus wurden auch hilfreiche neue Funktionen integriert, wie die Wireguard VPN Lösung oder das Teleport VPN. Gerade letzteres nutze ich oft. Im Betrieb präsentiert sich die Dream Machine Pro als zuverlässig. Bisher gab es in all den Jahren keine Aussetzer. Lediglich die Network App hat sich zu Beginn in regelmäßigen Abständen aufgehangen, was nur durch einen Neustart der Dream Machine behoben werden konnte. Als Ursache konnte ich die automatischen Cloud Backups ausmachen. Seitdem diese deaktiviert wurden, läuft die Dream Machine unterbrechungsfrei. Die integrierte Firewall der Dream Machine hat auch bereits auf mehrere Anomalien im Netzwerk hingewiesen und verhindert zuverlässig den Datenabfluss von Geräten im Netzwerk in unerwünschte Länder. Das Gerät wird im Betrieb auch nur mäßig warm, allerdings ist bei mehreren Unifi Komponenten im Rack dennoch eine aktive Kühlung anzuraten. Ohne verbaute Festplatte liegt die CPU-Temperatur der Dream Machine Pro bei ca. 40 Grad Celsius und das Gehäuse ist lediglich handwarm. Dadurch, dass keine HDD verbaut ist, ist meine Dream Machine auch nahezu unhörbar, den integrierten Lüfter hört man im Betrieb nicht, schon gar nicht verbaut im Netzwerkschrank. Fazit: ------- Ich habe bisher das Upgrade vom Cloud Key Gen 2 zur Dream Machine Pro. Die Dream Machine ist deutlich performanter als die Kombi aus CK und Security Gateway und arbeitet im Betrieb zuverlässig. Da Gerät lässt sich gut konfigurieren, bietet neben der Netzwerkkonfiguration mit Firewall und VPN Endpunkt praktische Funktionen und abgesehen von den gelegentlichen Abstürzen der Network App zu Beginn arbeitet das Gerät ausgesprochen zuverlässig. Daher würde ich jederzeit wieder zur Dream Machine Pro greifen, allerdings würde ich mir überlegen, evtl. zur SE Version zu greifen, die gleich PoE fähige Ports mitbringt. Dennoch ist auch die die normale Dreame Machine empfehlenswert, wenn man keine zusätzlichen PoE Funktionalitäten benötigt oder eh auf einen dedizierten PoE Switch setzt.
