What diameter candles does this one take?

Chime party candles are 1/2" X 4". They will burn for 2-2.5 hours.

what am I missing? the long piece with the hook does not fit the hole in the angel

Their should be three hooked pieces and three angels. Take the piece with the hook and put the opposite end into the little round hole of the angel. The hooked end is flat so it doesn't fall out when going around.
