Will this bulb detect motion when mounted on a lamp post with the bulb facing up?

I’m sure it will, I have 2 on my front porch. I can be inside with front door closed and 2 solid wood French doors closed 6 feet away and the lights come on. How, I have no idea.

Why do they just stay on. I put it in a lamp in the basement where there is no motion, and it never shuts off?

There may be something in the basement triggering it. Try it in some other location. If it stays on there you may have a bad bulb.

What size is a light bulb in inches?

It is approximately the same size as an old style incandescent light bulb that one would put into a table lamp or ceiling light socket. I'm using mine in an overhead recessed porch light fixture socket

What can I do so that the sensor does not detect motion in a specific direction?

Shield that part of the light bulb. Hope that works.
