Whoโs home for dinner? What shall we cook? What do we need to buy? And donโt forget the washing-up! Helping with real tasks is a natural progression from pretend play, and is a crucial stage in a childโs development. Achieving a shared goal encourages a sense of responsibility, and develops many skills useful in later life. Simple conversational text and lively illustrations are carefully designed to encourage further dialogue between reader and child. Review: Oh my GOODNESS! My 2 year old loves it - If you have a 2 year old that loves pretend play eg cooking and shopping then this is the book for you my little one has me reading it over and over and over and over and overr! Lovely pictures, not too many words on each page. Review: Simple book - Bought it for as a starter story for a food tech lesson within an SEN setting. My 2 and a half year old loved to too. Great to encourage some food tasting!

One of our favorites
This particular book is one of our favorites in the Helping Hands series. The little girl goes to the store (on the back of a bike), helps buy ingredients, and cooks a pizza at home with her family, helps set the table and clear up. She chooses vegetables and helps lay out a pizza -- even young kids can imitate some of the actions, and my daughter loves the page with the pizza topped to look like a face. (I'm reposting my review of the series as a whole here.) This series of books is oddly hard to search for -- as a tip, search for Georgie Birkett and Jess Stockham to find all of them that I've turned up so far; searching just for Helping Hands brings up mostly unrelated books. The series as a whole is fantastic -- all the books have diverse characters even in the background, nontraditional families and gender roles, often pictures of urban life that feel modern, and kids doing interesting and real activities that they may actually do. I do note that these books aren't a straightforward read, because there's relatively little text for a lot of stuff happening on the page, and the text has no markers to tell you who's talking. When I read these to my daughter, I spend a lot of time talking about what's happening on the page and explaining, rather than just reading the text. I like that, but I suggest taking a look at the preview if you're not sure if that's for you.
