After flying for over 50 years, I am now teaching flight and ground school at a local Community College flight science program. Beside teaching electronic flight bag, the DPE insists we teach the paper and pencil methods too. I have not used an E6B for decades, so needed one to reacquaint myself with this tool. Back before EFB, we would buy metal version of these for durability, but then we needed them for years of service for every flight. Today, after initial training and testing, I seriously doubt if this tool will travel with them. However, you cannot use your iPAD with EFB on the written tests. Other that training, the convenience of EFB such as Foreflight, Garmin Pilot, and others have made this tool almost obsolete. There are other variations of this tool such as the Jeppesen CR-3, or the Sporty's Electronic E6B. They work well and I have each. For my Commercial through CFII written tests, I used the Electronic E6B and was very happy with it's easy operation.

You will need a dry erase marker to use it for wind calculations and correction, and other than that its self sufficient.There are many calculations possible and it is ACCURATE if you learn to use it.
