Is this a zero-crossing relay?

The short answer is NO..... However I think a more detailed explanation is required. A "Zero Crossing" circuit is more an AC control method rather than this: it is a DC input to AC output device... meaning any DC voltage greater than 3VDC is considered on "On" signal and this On signal turns on a AC load (24-480VAC). ... SO a small DC input signal turns on the larger AC load. Make sense?

Is there a difference between using 5V vs 30V for control current? Does it affect performace of solid state switch?

This product can control whether the alternating current appliance(s) connected to it are energized or not with anywhere from 3 - 32 Volts of Direct Current. Any direct current voltage within this range is adequate enough to flip the switch within the device that closes the alternating current side of the switch. An appliance on the alternating current side of the switch works no better or worse depending upon the voltage on the direct current side of this switch the energizes the switch (not the appliance)--provided it is from 2 -32V--anymore than a window air conditioner works better or worse if a young weak child, or a bodybuilder turns its switch on.

The output spec is 24-480Vac. Will it work for 20Vac load voltage?

No you need at least 24V to a max of 480V or anywhere in between

Can it be used to power on a thermostate (c wire) that is 24vac (0.5 amp) from 12v dc?
