Ugly Love: A Novel

I couldn't put this book down! From the very first chapter, I was completely invested in the characters and found myself wanting to know what would happen next. The story is emotional, beautifully written, and had me feeling everything from happiness to heartbreak. The characters felt real and flawed, and their journey kept me turning the pages late into the night. It's one of those books that stays with you long after you finish it. If you enjoy emotional romance with plenty of depth and unforgettable characters, this is definitely a must-read. Just be prepared to have your emotions put through the wringer—in the best way!

feel like crying? need to release a "bazillion" emotions at the bands of a Colleen Hoover read... well idk exactly what you're looking for but Ugly Love did it for me . I cried, laughed, became angry, and fell in love w these characters. Emotion , sexy , funny read that becomes this book its so great . I had wanted to read this for months but was always hesitant. and continuously it put it off. I am kicking myself for not choosing to read this sooner over the other books I read before this one. I must say and confirm that Ugly Love was my first read by Colleen Hoover and grand it was . I read Ugly Love from beginning to end . not wanting to put it down . I made it known when I finished having had to stay up all night . it's been awhile since a book has made me tear up as much as this one. and the cover is beautifully done. the significance of the water and blue tone represents all this book can be. very symbolic and pretty. well done!! I wasn't at all expecting what was thrown at me while reading this. and a lot was. Ugly Love's recent events are told from the perspective of Tate. our main character, a 23 yr old nursing student recently moved to live w her over protective brother Corbin , in San Francisco. meets Miles . Miles is basically described as a man who doesn't know how to love. why ?? stay tuned, everything is revealed. no cliffhanger, all questions are answered. right here. in these 300+ pages. like losing my tears and sanity in a book isn't traumatic enough!! ;) no sequel is needed and I hope Colleen doesn't write one, being that I've noticed it's difficult to feel the same magic for a second book as you did w the first one. the whole story focuses around two facts.... Two rules: "Don't ask about my past, and never expect a future." Whatever that means, later we learn the reason of Miles' pain and sadness and refusal to love someone other than who he wanted. Tate and Miles' relationship is absolutely beautiful. they seem to have it all . if only they'd stop lying to each other . They truly have it all... good looks, great friends. hot sex.. yes sexy, and this book was indeed that. it's more than a great storyline .. being my first Colleen Hoover read I had no clue what to expect with her writing style going into this. I learned so much. I don't usually read the type of books with an obvious man afraid of commitment as Miles was. there was something different about Ugly Love that kept my interest. obvious attraction maybe. but definitely full of wanting to know what was yet to come. Ugly Love is really a story that'll stay with you for awhile and haa earned a place in my personal favorites . im currently suffering from a major book hangover, many more books to read on my to be read list and after finishing this they haven't at all crossed my mind!! Every other chapter (basically the even numbered chapters I've noticed) the POV changes between past, and present. which I must say was really confusing at first . Then it quickly grew on me, the way Miles describes this relationship w his previous girlfriend Rachel, 6 years ago is practically art. it becomes painfully obvious of his attraction and love directed towards this girl. "Rachel, Rachel, Rachel. She's like poetry. Like prose of love letters and lyrics, cascading down the center of a page. Rachel, Rachel, Rachel." .... now, THAT is poetry!! these chapters from a younger Miles, is pure poetry. and I personally loved it! as easily as you fall in love w Tate and Miles you fall in love w Rachel and Miles too. you feel Rachel and Miles' connection towards each other jump off the pages and directly into your heart... with every chapter their story keep you guessing and wondering what happens next. I, however, was not at all prepared for what really does happen. Sympathy, compassion, grief, and sorrow .... cue the tears and the "ugly love" . because things do indeed turn very Ugly. hence the title of the book and the whole reasoning behind Miles and Tate's relationship. I was expecting a love story with a typical storyline.... boy likes girl . girl likes boy. they kiss they hook up fall in love the end. I wasnt at all expecting what I got. I cried, laughed, became angry, and fell in love w these characters and the whole concept and story. soon to become a movie I cant help but be glad I finally managed to read this before then . that is really something i'll be keeping my eyes and ears open for . all i can say is Hollywood ?? PLS dont eff it up !! pls kno a review for a book like this is hard to write without revealing too much away of what's to come. there weren't any unnecessary fillers of information that didn't become of relevance later. everything flowed together perfectly. even w the transitions of past and present. which worked perfectly!! just know you're in for one heck of a ride and one heck of a pool of emotion and love for the character as well as their feelings towards each other. just know by reading this book alone I've learned that Colleen Hoover is a genius and mastermind the conjure up a story as beautiful as this. I commend Colleen for wanting to tackle and write about a level of pain many ppl refuse to believe exist. for this to be my first read by her I will definitely be reading and looking for more recent reads. word of advice .... keep tissues handy !!

The story and characters are good, she knows how to write a book, the ending is just expected. I mean most books are like that but we didn’t get much twists and turns on this one. It’s still a good read, and the story is incredible sad. The pain is definitely felt through words.

I have sat on this book and my thoughts now for more than a month. I was fortunate enough to win this book in a "Scavenger Hunt," at Book Bash 2014. I also, waited close to a month to read it. I wanted to make sure I could give all of my attention to Ugly Love, and the characters that evolve in this book. So without further ado, here are my thoughts.... Colleen Hoover is the Mastermind of Fictional Literature. She has a way to manipulate your heart, a way to manipulate your mind, and most importantly your mind. Her words shake you to your core, but in the best way possible. She makes you FEEL absolutely everything. It isn't just a reading experience, it is a "Colleen Hoover Experience." Tate and Miles, are a pair of characters that, left me breathless. They are each in their own minds. They are both trying to choose their path in life, without disrupting anything. Basically, they are two people who are Workaholics. Two people are finding their way in life. But they aren't just that, they are passionate about their lines of work. They pour themselves into their work, and their interactions really show this. However, I feel Miles did more than Tate did. He has his reasons, in which we learn throughout this whole novel. It is slowly poured into the pages of who Miles is, and why he is the way he is. Miles is a man of few words, he's hot and cold. He has his head on straight. But he keeps himself guarded; even more guarded than Fort Knox. And Tate is more of any open book, looking to excel in life. Both Tate and Miles are similar, yet different. They want the same end game in life, but they also want more in terms of "comfort." Their comfort is like a rapid blazing inferno, sweeping away everything in its path. It is hot, it is sexy, and it makes me tingly just thinking about it. They have a hot desperate passion, they connect, but they also don't see eye to eye. I liked that they weren't able to see eye to eye though. It helped to develop more of their 'relationship.' It helps define them as characters. By defining, I mean, it helps us as readers to see them better. They each have their own walls, their own issues. But they both battle that inner demon. Colleen didn't write her usual, fluffy, hardly any sexual interactions, in Ugly Love. This book is raw, filled with intense feelings and passion, it is terribly heart-breaking, and extremely sexy. She poured that heat into her words. That heat, is one of those feelings I mentioned above. It is hot. It had me all sorts of discombobulated. Colleen has written her characters, that us readers can connect with. Most of her readers are adults, most readers have or are in these situations that come to light in this book, and most of her readers, including me, love passion. Colleen really outdid herself with this book. I have yet to read one of her books and become unhappy. I honestly feel that with each book, we get more of her. She sheds herself into these characters. It isn't just her heart and soul, it is something bigger than that. Miles and Tate will definitely show you this. They will give you so much. And this so much, will tear you up inside and out. With each book that Ms. Hoover releases, I fall more in love with her. Her writing style, especially in UL, is brilliant. She changes it up a bit with each story she gives us, but it is always that quality that leaves me wanting more. Each of her book possess a semblance of life. Ugly Love is an example of that. A HUGE example of that. Go into this book with your eyes wide open, absorb her words, let it resonate with you, and then slowly dissect the pages in front of you. If I had more then five stars to rate this book I would. It is more than freaking fantastic, it is mind-numbing, blowing, and superior to her other books that are out. This is a book that I will carry in my heart, forever.

She had read it and needed someone to talk about it with. I mean when your friend calls and is so in love with a book she's begging you to read it, you do it. I wasn't disappointed, at all. I've loved all of Colleen Hoover's books, I was expecting the same with this one and it surpassed my expectations. Tate is moving in with her brother Corbin, just until she gets her own place. It perfect really, he's a pilot and is gone a great deal of the time so there isn't a rush on her finding somewhere to live right away. After driving for six hours all she wants to do is get something to eat and go to bed. Just one little problem, well a big problem, a man is passed out leaning against Corbin's door. She calls Corbin and asks him what to do and after some craziness she finds out that the man is Miles, the next door neighbor. She gets him in the apartment and on the couch to sleep it off. She's attracted to him but with her in school and working she doesn't need the distraction. He cries in his sleep and calls out for Rachel.. Yep, doesn't need that whole mess. Miles doesn't let people in. He meets Tate after his night on the couch and he's not sure what's going on. She's beautiful and is making him want things he just won't let himself have. His life is not a normal 24 year olds life. He remember's her rubbing his head while he cried and her telling him everything will be alright. His past haunts him and it has such a powerful hold on him; and he lets it rule him. Starting this thing with Tate was probably the worst idea on the planet but he can't help it, he has to be with her and she agreed to his terms, no asking about his past and no expecting a future. They aren't friends so it won't mess up anything. Slowly Tate sees changes in Miles. She agreed to his rules but she's having a hard time sticking to them because she's starting to feel for him.. Feel more than being his sex buddy. She desperately wants to know about his past but if she even hints at him opening up he shuts her down and shuts her out. Finally at her breaking point she explodes, and then leaves. She doesn't see him and she moves out. Then Miles talks to Cap.. CAP! I loved this guy. He's the doorman of the building and he's become Tate's friend. Cap tells Miles something that finally sinks in. “I know the thought of confronting your past terrifies you. It terrifies every man. But sometimes we don’t do it for ourselves. We do it for the people we love more than ourselves." I know its not much and he said soooooo much more but really to share anymore than that with you would be giving away all the things. You really have to read this book. I couldn't put it down. I inhaled it with in a matter of hours and I texted my friend at all the spots that gave me chills, that made me laugh or want to cry. This book, THIS BOOK! It gives you all the feels. It makes you mad and happy, sad and joyous. You can't take my word for it, read it. Go on. I'll just be sitting here basking in this glorious story. What are you still doing here?!!?? GO READ IT. I'll leave you with this little bitty tidbit... “Tate,” he whispers. “I miss you.” Whoa. I was absolutely not expecting to hear those three words, but they just became my new favorite words. I and miss and you. “Say it again, Miles.” “I miss you, Tate,” he says immediately. “So much. And it’s not the first time. I’ve missed you every single day we weren’t together since the moment I met you.” Go read it. I promise, you won't regret it. You will probably need tissues though.. I'm just sayin.

Tate is moving into her brother’s apartment in San Francisco while she is finishing school, she wasn’t looking for love or a relationship, just a place to live while she focuses on her career. Miles wasn’t looking for anything. He was barely existing. Focused on his career as a pilot and not much else. When Tate encounters the man slumped in front of the door, blocking her way she never imagined that she’d be making a deal with him weeks later, a no-strings arrangement. But the more see is around Miles, the more she wants to know about him. But Miles isn’t willing to reopen those wounds. ========== This is not your typical love story of hearts and flowers. This is a love story that is tarnished with the heartbreaking moments, the dirty parts the ugly side. The parts of love that make you want to guard your heart at all costs to avoid ever hurting that much. But... it’s also the story of finding a way to want something beautiful even after knowing how ugly it can be, how much it can destroy you. It’s about finding something that makes all that pain seem like it didn’t exist, because in those moments where it feels so good, you feel like nothing can touch you. That nothing else existed before. I fell in love with Miles instantly. There was no way to protect my heart from the destruction that I knew was coming, there was no possible way to read this without letting him seep into you completely. He wasn’t supposed to give you hope for more, but he gave it to you every time he opened his mouth. This was a different type of CoHo read for me, but I have to say I loved every second of it. The dual POV were so starkly different. With Tate you got the present, in a normal narration kind of way and with Miles you got his past. Six years ago, the story that led him to where he was today... And it was poetic, beautiful and absolutely haunting. With a title like Ugly Love, you expect that you won’t escape this read without shedding tears and although you assume bits and pieces of Mile’s past – nothing is going to prepare you for the reality of it. That moment. It was soul crushing. It’s been a little over 24 hours since I finished and just thinking about it has me in tears all over again. About the Miles POV chapters. I loved these. I loved that they were written this way. It was beautiful, it was innocent and it kept me from falling in love with a different love story, one that had its own place, but wasn’t the one that we were supposed to fall in love with. And Cap. An eighty year old man nearly stole the show. Colleen Hoover did not disappoint with this story. I have loved every single book she has written but Ugly Love holds a special place in my heart. I can’t say that it is my favorite, because honestly, all of them are my favorite, but this one is just stood out in its own way and this story is one that will stay with me for years to come.

I started out really enjoying Ugly Love. I read through it pretty quickly, but somewhere around the 60% mark it's like a veil was lifted. I was no longer starry-eyed, and I suddenly opened up to all the flaws and imperfections in this book. They were there all along, but I only just started acknowledging them. I literally think I recoiled a little and thought to myself, “Do I really like this?” ==== Miles: the mysterious guy I feel like Miles was a girl’s interpretation of “mysterious”. It’s the kind of mysterious that’s supposed to be all hot and sexy, but really it was just kind of blank.. The guy had no personality, he never smiled, he never laughed, and he refused to talk about his past. I feel like we were supposed to get off on this “mysterious” persona, but it was a little too empty for me. Is it really attractive if a guy NEVER smiles? Is that where we’re at these days? ==== Miles: the poet All of Miles’s flashback chapters are from his point of view and they’re so poetic and deep. So was most of his dialog during these flashbacks. I didn’t think much of it at first, but after a while it just hit me all at once. A guy doesn’t talk like this. Okay maybe I’m generalizing. Guys can be poetic. But I read his “poetry” and his deep dialogue and it didn’t feel real or natural to me at all. All I could think of was, “I’ve never met a guy who would talk like this.” Quote: "Rachel .....Rachel ..........Rachel, Rachel, Rachel. She’s like poetry. Like prose and love letters and lyrics, cascading down the center of a page. Rachel, Rachel, Rachel." // End quote These are Miles’s thoughts. It was actually written in that format too. Is this how guys think in their heads? ==== Tate — who are you? Why are you special? Miles describes Tate as, “the only girl who has been able to reach me in more than six years”. But I kind of had that feeling of WHY? Why is Tate so special? The problem here is that Miles and Tate don’t have a relationship rooted in personality or discussions or anything like that. All they do is have sex. All Tate thinks about is Miles. She doesn’t have much of a life or personality outside of him. So I felt like: who is this girl? How can she have affected Miles so strongly if she doesn’t even have a personality or interests outside of him? All she does is go to work, come home, have sex. Even as a reader, we didn’t get to see a whole lot of her personality. Every thought in her head was just about how delicious Miles is, how she misses Miles, how every word out of his mouth is her new favourite word, etc. If you were to take Miles out of her life, she’d practically be an empty shell. So why is she so special to him? ==== Tate: the clingy, annoying girl So Miles comes outright and says: “Don’t ask about my past,” he says firmly. “And never expect a future.” He’s always SO upfront with her. He basically says, “I will never love you. I will never give you hope. You and me will never happen. It’s just sex.”. And yet Tate is the annoying girl who agrees to the terms and then tries to make him fall in love with her. "I’ve been holding out hope that if I take it slowly enough with him, he’ll eventually break through whatever it is that’s holding him back." Does anyone else find that annoying? It’s like she’s saying: “Okay I promise we won’t have a future…. yet *wink wink*“. As if there’s some inside joke that they both know he’ll change his mind eventually. Who does that? ==== Overall There are so many things I took issue with, but I still kind of enjoyed Ugly Love. That’s why I gave it three stars, which is still a decent rating. Even with all these problems and annoyances, I can’t deny that I was into Ugly Love for a huge portion of the book. And even after I started noticing the problems, it was still un-put-downable for me. I guess that has to count for something.

It's a beautifully ugly story. Hopeful. Heartbreaking. The tug and pull. I love all characters and the story is very well written. I'll keep this one in my library for some time. I can see myself reading it again.

This is my third Colleen Hoover book and my favorite so far! Didn’t think i was gonna love it as much because of the cover and story but MAN was I hooked! It’s got the spice, the tenderness, the romance, the tea, the hurt, the fun. Wow. One I will ALWAYS remember

I loved reading this book, couldn't put it down. As always a very well written book with great understanding of her subject.

Goed en vlot leesbaar boek. Mooi en aangrijpend verhaal!

This book is a sad story that follows a girl named Tate. I cannot say more. Buy it.
