What is the reliable range for this unit?  Too, how much is it affected by the weather or  upper atmospheric conditions?

To tell you the truth, there are several factors one must understand. Radio couminications at certain frequencies such as Microwave the rain and weather has an effect. But this is a very shortwave length. When we go to a frequency that is lower the longer the antenna will be. Therefore the longer the wavelength. At Citizens Band frequencies we are talking about a antenna that is 8' 6" in length for a 1/4 wavelength. Back in the 1970's a 102" steel whip was the mobile antenna to use, this antenna would give the best all round range on CB. Today this antenna is the best for mobile operations. Sence were talking base station operations. The Ionosphere is what causes the radio waves to Propagate over great distances. Forget about the word atmosphere. Our ionosphere has four or lets say five layers. These layers are charged by our Sun when the D and E layer is charged, Radio signals in the High Frequency portion of the electromagnetic spectrum will Propagate signals over great distances. Citizens Band is in the upper part of the HF spectrum. So antennas do play a important part of any Radio system. A typical CB Base station antenna system usually consist of a what is called a Vertical antenna. A good all round base antenna is a Antron 99 this antenna is a 1/2 wavelength. It preforms well and isn't overly expensive. The best way talk long distances is to have at least a Three element Yagi Beam antenna. This requires a motor and control box to aim the antenna in the direction the Propagation is coming from. Mounting these antennas at your home isn't too difficult. There is a lot of Info avalible on line. But with the proper antennas and when the Skip is good (Propagation). You'll be able to talk world wide on Citizens Band. But we also have Rules that prohibit using External RF Power amplifers. We are really not allowed to talk over 150 miles. People break these rules everyday. It is a fun way to talk all over the US and the World. It is also Illegal to Modify any CB to operate above Ch 40 or to go below Ch 1. With a Good SSB Base Station and one really should put money into antenna system, it is well worth it to have reliable mobile to base system that works. In emergencies and cell phones or land lines are out, at least you have something to talk to other people with. This is the most important part of having a CB system that works well. I recommend that if you have an interest in radio to get involved in CB. Don't waist your money on low end equipment you'll be disappointed. SSB base and mobile radios are the best for the money. Read up and look into what it is all about. Antenna installation requires at least three or four friends, Antenna mast or a pipe, Coaxial cable such as RG-213, 50 ohm coax or you can use RG-8x coax, this is smaller dia cable, Plastic wire tie's, Maybe guy wire or guy cable, A test meter that connects between the CB and antenna (SWR Meter). Figure out, plan, and over engineer your antenna system. Look on line of what others did. Most importantly Grounding and Lightning Protection. This Info is on line too. A well grounded CB will talk farther then one that's not grounded, Besides if you do take a lightning strike it has a place to go. I hope that people reading this gets something out of this. Radio is fun. There is some maintentance involved too. Checking your Standing Wave Ratio on the antenna, This is done to insure the the antenna and CB has that 50 ohm match. I know it's a lot to take in if you never had a CB, Most important Have fun putting it all together. Most Important Research CB radio. A good rule of thumb is to put your base station antennas up at the hight of 35' min and max at 70' one or the other not in between, the reason is 35' is a full wavelength in hight and 70' is two wavelengths. You'll need a tower for the 70' hight. You see putting money into your antenna system will give you the best bang for the buck.

What kind of AC Power cord does the radio use?

It is a standard three prong 110v AC power cord.  It comes supplied with the Galaxy DX-2547.  As you probably already know, this radio can also operate on 12v DC power without any modifications. This redundancy makes the Galaxy DX-2547 extremely versatile since it can be used as a mobile radio, or as a base station in an RV. But this unit is probably best used as a base station in your home CB radio system.

what kind of speaker should i buy?  what size is the headphone jack?  is there a speaker built in the cb?

Zane you can buy many different external speakers the best I have found is a 4X6 inch speaker the radio takes a 1/8" plug and jack you can find any of these at Radio Shack or just look on Ebay to find what you need.  I use my radio and just use the speaker that is in the radio and the sound is pretty good.  You should try the one in the radio for awhile you may find out you don't kneed an external speaker. Does the Galaxy come with a Microphone?

Yes, It does. If you are going to buy a new Galaxy DX-1547, have it tuned and peaked and you can have some upper and lower channels put in it. Then put a D-104-mic on it and you will have a great skipper. I know because I have one. The best radio I ever had -BAR-NONE. it will dead key 9 watts and modulate 12 watts, or better.
