Ride, Vaquero!

Robert Taylor is one of my favorite actors in Westerns. He can play good guys and bad guys realistically. This is one of my favorite westerns in which he stars. I think you will like it as much as I do.

Loved the chemistry between Ava Gardner and Robert Taylor. Also Anthony Quinn was great in his part as the bad bandit with somewhat of a heart.

This an excellent movie Robert Taylor plays a great part along with Ava Gardner and Anthony Quinn again plenty of action well written story if you enjoy westerns this one i would recommend well worth purchasing sit down and enjoy.

This film has great stars which was typical of MGM films of the 1950's. Robert Taylor is one of my favorite actors, Ava Garder is very beautiful, and Howard Keel is O.K. But Anthony Quinn was acting over the top. Was a Mexican supposed to be like this? Shouting, gesticulating, emoting like a wild animal? You have to notice him when he is on the screen. Contrast him with Taylor. I prefer the minimal acting type of Taylor. There are many kind of love stories. The greatest one is between Quinn and Taylor, though mainly Quinn shows it. It is sometimes hard to understand the motivations of these people. There is a priest who talks about peace (do not kill!), but he is using guns like everybody else. Maybe motivation is not important in this kind of classy western. It is a watchable film, but not a great one (I give five stars only to Rio Bravo, Warlock and Magnificent Seven).

Good western about two brothers -- a gringo and a Mexican child. Together they become bandits and thieves until the gringo reforms. Good cast including Robert Taylor, Ava Gardner, Anthony Quinn and Howard Keel. Good sets, costumes and scenery. A "class act" motion picture.

My hubby is collecting old cowboy movies and this is a perfect place to find them!

Great he loved it!

I love westerns, and I've always thought Robert Taylor made a good cowboy, and a lady friend of mine loves Ava Gardner, so I bought this one for us to watch. Anthony Quinn stands out as a psychotic Mexican bandit, and Robert Taylor does a good job as a tight-lipped philosophical cowboy, but poor Ava Gardner spends most of her time leaning her head back to stare up at Howard Keel. This is the least of the Robert Taylor westerns I've seen. I really like Westward the Women, The Law and Jake Wade and Many Rivers to Cross. Ride Vaquero! is good enough if you're in the mood for a western and don't have any better choices. And it's worth watching to think about the nature of westerns. The best westerns are about overcoming adversity. Howard Keel won't back down, but he's never heroic. Robert Taylor plays a reluctant bandit who refuses to commit to anything. Ava Gardner gets to be little more than arm candy. It's only Anthony Quinn who plays a crazy killer that has any passion and love for life, but he only tears things down. Westerns are about men and women building something in the wilderness, and Howard Keel fits the western hero role, but the movie doesn't focus on him. The bigger movies stars steal the story.

je me suis régalé , Anthony Quinn est parfait puisqu'il est d'origine mexicaine et sa relation conflictuelle avec son frère d'adoption bien étudiée,Robert Taylor dans son personnage énigmatique est aussi remarquable avec des répliques aussi intelligentes qu'inattendues que j'ai rarement entendues dans un film, avec un jeune Jack Elam et son regard divergent pilier de westerns , sans oublier Ava Gardner ravissante et ses problèmes avec son mari Howard Keel très plausibles font un film hors du commun

Guter Film mit gnadenlosem Anthony Quinn. Das frühere Liebespaar Gardner und Taylor versprüht immer noch Feuer. Einer der besten Filme von Bob nach der letzten Jagd. Ava spielt super und ist sehr sehenswert. Ich liebe alle Filme von Bob, aber dieser ist ganz besonders.

*【以下結末に触れています】 邦題『荒原の疾走』 南北戦争終結後の混乱に乗じて、テキサスの国境周辺では、メキシコ人、ホセ・エスクェダ(アンソニー・クイン)が、多数の部下を従え、我がもの顔で振舞っている。法などお構いなしで一帯を荒らし、保安官も手を出せない。ある日、この地で牧場を開こうと思っているキャメロン(ハワード・キール)が、新妻コーデリア(エヴァ・ガードナー)を伴って新居を訪れると、無残にも焼き払われ、牛たちも殺されていた。怒り狂ったキャメロンは、集会を開き、エスクェダの暴挙に断固戦う姿勢をみせるのだが…。 ロバート・テイラー、エヴァ・ガードナー、ハワード・キールという、当時のMGMの専属スターたちが豪華共演した西部劇の佳作。監督のジョン・ファロー(ミアの父親)にとっては、ジョン・ウェイン主演の『ホンドー』(北米盤Blu-ray" Hondo [Blu-ray] [Import ]")なども手がけるなど、多忙を極めた年の1本となった。原題の"Vaquero"とは、メキシコのカウボーイのこと。日本劇場公開は、同年12月22日。 野蛮が法と正義によって駆逐されて行く様を描いた、西部劇のひとつの定型を縦糸とした作品であるが、それ以上に、横糸である、ロバート・テイラー演じるミステリアスなガンマン、レオをめぐる三角関係のラブ・ストーリーが本作の主眼と言うべきだろう。それも、レオ、エスクェダ、キャメロンの男の関係とレオ、キャメロン、コーデリアの男女の関係が並行して描かれるという実に複雑なものだ。 前者の関係は、単純にホモ・セクシャル的ということはできないが(演じるアンソニー・クインは、その後、『 ワーロック [DVD ]』でも、ヘンリー・フォンダのガンマンとやはり同様の関係になる)、レオとエスクェダが、血のつながりはないものの義兄弟であり、そこにレオを引き離そうとするキャメロンが絡むことで、粘着的な愛憎が渦巻くものになっている。また、後者の関係は、婚姻状態のキャメロンとエスクェダの間に使用人のレオが現れたことで、エスクェダが彼に惹かれるという背徳的な香りが漂うもの。という具合に、本作はレオを中心に、否応なく彼に惹かれる人間たちが複雑に絡まり合い、感情の均衡が崩れるラブ・ストーリーになっているのだ。だから、西部劇としての爽快さは全くなく、不穏な雰囲気が作品を貫いている。ラストのエスクェダとキャメロン、エスクェダとレオの決闘なども、陰惨でやりきれない悲痛ささえ感じられる。脚本のフランク・フェントンは、本作の後、『 帰らざる河 [Blu-ray ]』や『 悪の花園 [DVD ]』などの異色西部劇を書き上げることからもわかるように、西部劇というジャンルそのものよりも、そこで描かれる抜き差しならない人間関係というものに関心を持っていたのだろう。 フィルム・ノワールの傑作"Where Danger Lives"における伝説の長廻しシーンをあげるまでもなく、ファロー監督は、長廻しで、俳優たちの演技を分断することなくじっくり引き出すことを好む人物。本作でも、極端な長廻しこそ駆使していないものの、基本、実力派の俳優陣のぶつかり合いをじっくりと写すことで、その熱気と感情の流れとうねりを逃さないようにしている。この一筋縄ではいかない、西部を舞台にしたラブ・ストーリーには適した演出だと言えるだろう。ロケーションが効いたロバート・サーティースの撮影も美しいところだ。 ファロー監督の演出に乗って、主要4人―テイラー、ガードナー、キール、クイン―が気持ち良さそうに、そして味わい深く、それぞれの人物を演じている。とりわけ、テイラーとクインが出色。言うまでもなく、テイラーは、30年代からMGMを代表する2枚目スターとして君臨して来たわけだが、40年代以降、年を重ねるにつれ、顔に剣が出て悪相になってきた。本作では、その悪相を生かす(？)形で、不幸な過去を持つ虚無的なガンマンを好演している。寡黙で、悪と善が拮抗するような、あいまいでミステリアスな造形が素晴らしいかぎり。クインは、粗暴で下卑たメキシコ人ボスを熱演。単純に、相貌だけ変わる皮相的なものではなく、内面からも変身してみせるカメレオン俳優ぶりには驚くばかりだ。『 道【淀川長治解説映像付き】 [DVD ]』でイタリア人、『 その男ゾルバ [Blu-ray ]』でギリシャ人(そして、駆け出しの頃はインディアン)にいともたやすく変身してみせたクインの面目躍如たるものがある。そして、紅一点のガードナーの神々しい美しさも(レオと数度交わされる視線もゾクリとする)、控えめながら鮮烈だ。 本DVD-Rは、米Warner Archiveによるオン・デマンド・DVD-R。米TCM放映用のマスターを使用したもの。レストアは一切施されていないので、所々キズがあり、カラーも褪色気味（アンスコカラーで撮影、テクニカラーでプリント）の画質。ただ、巻が進むにつれ、発色も次第に安定してくる。時代を考えれば、許容できる画質だろう。音声は、特に問題ない。嬉しいことに、予告編も収録(ただし、白黒版)。例によって、英語字幕は未収録。 本DVD-Rは、北米盤ながら、R-0(=All)なので、日本のR-2 プレーヤーで問題なく視聴可能だ。
