The Finishing Touch for Truly Razor-Sharp Edges
After the sharpening stones are put away, stropping is where a good edge becomes an exceptional one, and this double-sided leather paddle strop has earned a permanent place in my sharpening setup. I use it after every sharpening session to remove any remaining burrs or microscopic metal threads, and it does exactly what a strop should - refining the edge to a clean, wickedly sharp finish with excellent push-cutting performance. The ergonomic paddle design is comfortable to hold and easy to control, making consistent stropping passes simple even during longer sessions. While I would personally prefer slightly thicker leatherโsomething in the 5 - 6 oz range instead of the 3 - 4 oz used hereโthe leather quality is still very good and performs well with compound. One detail I really appreciate is the black leather, which hides metal staining far better than traditional tan or brown strops and keeps the tool looking cleaner over time. For anyone serious about knife sharpening, this strop is a valuable and effective finishing tool. It may be the final step in the process, but itโs often the most important one. Solid performance, thoughtful design, and an easy recommendation.

Very nice way to put a finishing touch on sharpened knives
Iโm not a fanatic about sharpening knives, but I do like to keep my kitchen knives sharp. Iโve never had a strop before and I wasnโt sure that it would actually do much of anything. However, I just got a new knife sharpener that works very well, and the makers of it said that a strop was a very good way to add a finishing touch when sharpening a knife. Turns out that theyโre right โ and this is a very good strop! Itโs well-made, and the handle and size are such that it is very easy to hold. Thereโs a rougher strip of leather on one side of the paddle, and a finer strip on the other. Both strips are quite thick and fastened tightly to the paddle. After sharpening my knives, I was able to quickly strop about 5-10 times in both directions on each side of the paddle, and it quickly added a nice finish. Given the price, this is a great value. Iโm very glad I got this. If you want to put the finishing touch on your knives, I think you will be glad, too.

What's a leather strop and how do you use it?
I am relatively new to knife sharpening. The only thing I knew about sharpening knives was that I had seen a barber in an old western movie sharpening a straight razor with a long leather belt. I searched that and found out it was called a "strop". In the past few months I have spent countless hours on YouTube learning knife sharpening. To understand what a leather strop does and when it is used you need an overview of knife sharpening. A knife starts out as a dull thin piece of metal with an edge that won't cut. You rub the knife forwards towards the blade edge on each side on a sharpening stone to create a thinner angled edge called an 'apex'. Sharpening stones come in grit ratings, the higher the number the finer the grit, kind of like sandpaper. Grits of 400 to 1000 are used to remove metal from the knife edge to create an apex capable of cutting. Next, stones with grits of 1000 and above are used to narrow the apex creating a smoother and sharper edge. You rub the knife backwards away from the blade edge to sharpen the edge so it cuts better. You move from 1000 grit to higher grits in stages, like 3000 grit and then 8000 grit. You have to do it in stages because it would take too long if you skip a step. For example, if you skipped 1000 and went straight to 3000, instead of taking 3 minutes to sharpen the edge, it would take 30 to 40 minutes because it removes that much less material. So you can get knives really sharp really fast if you work in stages using successively higher grit stones. At each stage the scratches on the surface of the metal are getting finer and the cutting edge is getting thinner. When you get to the end of that process with the sharpening stones, you move to a leather strop, which you also use backwards, rubbing away from the knife edge, on both sides. The strop polishes the metal and smooths out rough spots on the edge, turning it from a sharp blade into a razor blade. You start with the harder side of the leather strop. Then you turn it over and use the softer side. No matter what your highest grit sharpening stone is, the leather strop will make your knife significantly sharper. When you use your knife it will become progressively less sharp. And to restore the sharpness, you can use the leather strop. So the strop is used to finish any sharpening job and it is also used to maintain the sharpness of your knives. If you use the strop after every time you use your knife, you will double or triple the length of time you can use the knife before needing to sharpen it with sharpening stones again. I experimented with a raw leather belt. That helped me understand how important a leather strop is to knife sharpening. But it didn't work very well. Some parts were sharper and some were not. And that is what led me to purchase the Hutsuls leather strop. The Hutsuls leather strop has harder leather and softer leather attached to each side of a wooden plank with handle. This makes it easy to get a nice even draw across the knife edge which makes the knife evenly sharp. Conveniently flipping it over to the softer leather side makes it easy to complete the sharpening process and get the sharpest razor edge. I like my Hutsuls leather strop. I use it as the last stage in sharpening all of my knives. And I use it daily to maintain the sharpness of the knives I use the most. As far as I am concerned, the Hutsuls is a great product. And I consider it to be a critical element for sharpening and maintaining knives. I'm not sure why anyone would even own knives without also having a Hutsuls leather strop. I can't believe I only learned about it recently.

Worth using if you arent satisfied with your edge
This is my first time using a strop, so i am far from knowledgeable about what constitutes a "good" strop. after watching a few y*utube videos on stropping i would have to say that it makes a noticeable difference. Personally i am satisfied with this strop (hence the 4 stars, i didnt give it 5 stars because like i said earlier im a novice have no idea wth a 5 star strop would look like) what i can tell you is the owner of this company wrote me a hand written letter thanking me for my purchase and if i was "not 100% happy with the product, and/or you have any suggestions on how we can improve" i should contact him. that just SCREAMS sincerity, which is something i appreciate. quite a bit. my point being if you are unhappy later with a purchase from Hutsuls im sure they would make your return a painless experience.

Great strop for beginners and advanced users
First, never have I ever received a hand written thank you letter from any seller until now, just that appreciative thought to thank the buyer separates this seller from others. Secondly, I bought this for my bf who is learning how to sharpen knives for work and fun. The pictures I show is after he used it a few times, he was too excited to wait for pictures before using it. We found that it is genuine high quality leather used on both sides, and although thin as others have stated, it is more than thick enough to do what's needed of it. One side is slightly course and the other smooth. It was easy for him to hold the strop one hand and use the knife in the other and stay stable. While he's been sharpening knives without a strop for a few months, it made a huge difference using this after sharpening them. They were sharper, smoother, and lasted longer. Finally, I find it was definitely worth the price and that it's quality well exceeds the price of it and our expectations. There are definitely a ton more sharp knives around just so he has an excuse to use it. There are a lot of quality strops available online, if you find yourself second guessing different options, we definitely highly recommend this knife strop and are interested in what more this seller has to offer and even test out.

Who knew leather could be so useful?
1st let me say, I rarely leave reviews. They have become a weapon in the realm of online mistrust and lies. I received no compensation for this "review". But I did receive a wonderful handwritten letter from Andrew, the owner of the Hutsuls Co. ensuring me that if there was ANY issue with his product , that he would correct it immediately. Who writes letters anymore? Good on you Andrew! As for the strop itself, well, its really great. I was skeptical that a piece of leather could be so useful at sharpening metal blades, all kinds of metal blades, but low and behold, it was. The strop comes attached to a sturdy block of wood, making the delicate process of sharpening your blade a much easier process. It comes with a fine grit crayon that helps the blades achieve razor sharp status. I started with my semi-sharpened kitchen knives. I have a Japanese knife made in the style of traditional folded katanas and it was in serious need of some TLC, I was skeptical that a piece of leather would do the trick but after a bit of a learning curve- using a lesser quality knife- I was amazingly surprised at how sharp the blade was. It was scary! The strop won't necessarily make a chipoped or otehrwise damaged blade "like new" again, but if your blade is semi sharp the strop will elevate it to samurai status. This is not hyperbole, my kitchen knife is so sharp I'm partly afraid of it. There's a dozen or so strops available, I've even read you can use an old belt, but the strop from Hutsuls is a step above the rest. Its super easy to use, the wooden handle makes the process safer- no cuts on these hands. It's double sided, rough on one side and smooth on the other. The idea is to use the rough side for bringing the blade back to life and the smooth side makes it ready to shave with. You could but a strop from anyone, but knowing Andrew is there to provide support as well as a high quality product why go somewhere else? IF you but this item you just might get a really nice personalized response from the manufacturer. When was the last time ANY company did that for you?

Very good strop, would recommend
Thin and hard leather, which is critical for a crisp edge. Since I'm planning to use the strop with diamond emulsions only, I peel the suede side off and glued it suede side to the wood. Now I have two smooth leather sides, which work well with diamond emulsions. The wood they use is of good quality too, the attention to detail is very good, straight grain across the whole strop, they even use some putty to fill the imperfections on the handle.

Great Strop
So, I'm kinda new to using serious sharpeners and strops...use to just use the kitchen steel for the most part. Decided to try this in combination with a sharpening system....glad I added this Strop to the kit. It's made well and comes with the green stopping compound. Simple to use and very effective. It nicely finishes off a blade where the sharpening system leaves off. I had one blade that was already sharp but decided to give it a few passes on the Hutsul (both side) and it made it razor hair shaving sharp again. Great product and fast delivery. Would highly recommend.

Very satisfied
Works as i figured a strop is supposed to. Comes with both the rough and smooth side of leather and green grit compound. i put the compound on the rough side so that i could leave the smooth side as smooth as possible. I used it to restore 2-3 of my decently sharp knives to razor sharp in only a few minutes, super easy to use and has a good feel to it. the green compound leaves a slight shiny mirror like finish on the edge of the blade of my knives, which im fond of as it makes the blade look clean and smooth. the wood is solid and the leather seems quality, nice and tough, not flimsy or easily tearable. plan on using it for my daily kitchen knife maintenance so that i can spend less time using my whetstones and prolong the life of my knives. good product, cant really go wrong with the purchase if you're looking for a good strop for general use
