Satta Massagana

I had never heard a full album by the Abyssinians before, but after stumbling across the reviews for this CD I felt like it was one I needed to hear. Al the praise is justified. Yes and yes again: this one qualifies as a reggae classic!The sound of this group would fit into the roots reggae mold, similar to great 1970s recordings by the likes of the Wailers or Burning Spear. I even hear a bit of Steel Pulse groove on some songs. Lyrically, the songs lean more towards the spiritual side of things, something you can glean from song titles such as "The Good Lord" and "Jerusalem." They don't shy away from "giving praise to God and loving one another", in many songs, but for non-believers like myself such fervent preaching is thankfully kept to a minimum, or at least not enough to distract from the music. And that's the main thing; the grooves and harmonies are superb! On that count the Abyssinians are masters of the sound. It also doesn't hurt to have a crack band behind them, including legendary musicians such as Sly and Robbie .But after hearing these fine songs, the big mystery for me was: when was this recorded? The song credits don't tell, and you can't use the CD reissue date (2006) to date it properly, so only after reading the liner notes does SOME information churn up, hinting that the album was recorded in 1969 (including the four bonus songs on this CD reissue), but not put on the market until 1971. Other than the lack of specific recording dates, the music packs a punch and should please any fan of classic reggae music.

An opening track usually says a lot about an album, not to mention the band that created it. That's definitely the case here. Lyrically, "Declaration of Rights" makes a strong statement against oppression. But it does so against a harmony-filled musical backdrop that feels understated, relaxed, almost soothing. The contrast couldn't be more extreme -- forcing you to listen carefully to the message.If you like the first offering, you're in luck. Satta Massagana is strong throughout. Other highlights includes "Forward Unto Zion," "Y Mas Gan" (my personal favorite song, featuring a spooky synth/horn line) and "Peculiar Number." A classic 1970s reggae album from a great band.

Album came in perfect condition and plays perfectly. Good record to have on vinyl… classic

My reggae collection is a big thing in my life. I was very pleased to be able to add this classic collection, with bonus tracks. Aside from the several well-known classic cuts, I have been introduced to other songs I was not familiar with which are very impressive.

Amazing. Timeless. A must have for fans of 70's reggae. Sound quality is good. Harmonies are transcendent. I had forgotten how good this is.

I wanted the copy of Satta Massagana played in the Rockers movie. I didn't get it. However, I was introduced to a great reggae group.
