Oink Games' Insider is a must-have social deduction small group game for all
Overview: (1) Game Description (2) Component Quality (3) Game Value & Review/Recommendation (1) Game Description: Insider is a Social Deduction, word-guessing game for a party of players between 4-8 players; with one game lasting around/up to 15 minutes. The set-up involves players being allocated roles with one secret role of one person as an Insider anonymous to the rest of the group. One other player assumes the Master role allocating the secret word to be guessed by the rest of the group and the Insider. The Insider player must attempt to influence the group to guess the right word without giving themselves away! If the group fails to guess the word, all "fail". If the group succeeds then they then vote on who they think the insider is. If they guess successfully the group wins, if not the insider wins. What is fascinating with this game is the social dynamics, the change in task, different agendas mixing together through both cooperation and confrontation or deflection. (2) Component Quality: The graphic design, minimalist box and lightness of the product are of outstanding and peerless quality by Oink Games once again. So much of the game is in the players' minds so the components mixture of magic patterns and suggestive eyes is a perfect set-up for this social situation through the high quality of the art. The aesthetic form fits the function of the game so well here and I would say easily makes the price of the game excellent value. (3) Game Value and Review/Recommendation: The small size is a major asset of this game, being perfectly convenient for lots of situations for a group to play this game. It's short, but very compulsive due to the social dynamics and the shifting rules from questioning/word guessing to discussing and voting who could be the Insider with possibly multiple rounds here. The rules are simple and quick to pick-up. This is a brilliant party style game. The simplicity, minimalism make it very accessible for any group of people to try to play and I would say Insider is one of the most highly engaging games in this sub-genre. Sheer quality of game design from Oink Games: A really versatile minimalist party game for all.

You are being controlled--you WILL have fun
The back of the box asks, "Do we really have free will? Who decides this? Are we controlled by what we hear and what we see, even while thinking we decide freely?" It goes on to say, "Insider is a game that deals with these questions." Well, kind of. But whether or not it deals with these questions decisively, it's a lot of fun. At the start of the game, role cards are passed out to all players. Role cards can be Commons, Insider, or Master. The player who receives the Master card reveals it and, while everyone's eyes are closed, reveals a word card from the deck. The Master closes their eyes and tells the Insider to look at the word. Once the Insider has looked at the word, the Master puts the card away, and all players open their eyes. Then the game begins. The non-Master players have five minutes to ask yes or no questions about the word, 20 Questions style, to figure out what the Master's word is. The twist is that one player knows what the word is. Everyone loses is no one guesses the word, but the Insider loses if they are discovered. So the Insider tries to ask probing questions that frame the discussion without giving themselves away. If the team guesses the word, there's a time of discussion (lasting no longer than the time it took to guess the word), and then a vote. If the Insider receives the most votes, the other players win. In any other scenario, the Insider wins. Insider is fascinating, because it involves a clever balance of asking the right questions but not being TOO clever about it. The game feels similar to Spyfall, only in some ways, it involves a lot less pressure: rather than trying to fit in, the Insider knows the hidden information. The twist is that they have to be careful to not reveal too much. I've seen the Insider win by asking lots of questions and by asking none at all. The trick is steering the conversation when it needs to be steered, which the timer element helps with immensely. The components of the game are great, and the game is almost pocket sized (definitely purse sized). I love this game and look forward to the next time I can drag it out. Even if it doesn't deliver on answering questions of free will, it does succeed in, as the box says, "entertain[ing] all players to the max."
