US Robotics V.92 USR5686E External Modem + Fax, 56K

You know, I look at these other reviews and can't understand them. I have used US Robotics modems since they came out with the speedy 2400 bps model back in 80-something. Never had any complaints. The only reason I ever replaced one was more speed! The first exception was the 56K one I bought on ebay 5 years ago. Paid $25 for it and it worked perfectly until 1/22/2006. For some reason, it couldn't pick up the phone. Enter Amazon and this modem. I ordered it at 4 PM CST on 1/23 and it was here by noon on 1/24. I unplugged the old modem and just put the same cables into the new one. First dial out didn't connect but have had five now that did (as of midnight). No connections at less than 40K and one at 48K! First time I ever hit that speed in all my years of dial-up.I don't know how the software drivers in this package are but I can testify to the ones I have been using for 3 years. It has been my experience with USR that you must be positive which modem you actually have and get the right drivers. They used to have a tool that you download that would tell you what drivers you needed.I find it hard to believe that the other four reviews here had such uniformly bad experiences. I would not use a dial up modem from any other company. I live well out in a rural area of Louisiana and will not have a faster way of accessing the Internet anytime soon. I did not hesitate to buy this modem.Your milage may vary.

I have to use this modem to communicate with traffic signal controllers. It works and is very reliable. Its easy to set up and small so does not take a lot of space inside the cabinet. Can't go wrong with this one.

This is exactly what I needed to get remote communication established to a PBX. I powered it up and moved the dip switches and sent the commands to program it for use. Move the switches to normal operation and hooked it up. Worked exactly like it's supposed to.

Heck yeah, I'm just so happy this is still for sale! Love it!

I've been using two of these modems for about a month now without any complaints. We use each modem for each retail POS system at my place of business. We gave up high speed credit card processing for dial up. The modems have been working fine thus far. We've had a couple of connection errors during some transactions but nothing to concerning. I.e. lost carrier. Not sure what that means. Like a previous reviewer said, the modems have a small footprint which is nice if you are tight on space. The setup and install was very easy too. The only negative I see to the whole system is the required use of a serial cable. I had to order two serial cables as the USR 5686E DOES NOT provide a serial cable in the box. For the price of these modems, USR should supply a cable.

This was a great deal at the time. They satisfied my needs for a customer at the time but now they have moved on to Internet communications and I have about six of these units still in the box.If any one needs them they are available.

I bought my modem about 3 weeks ago after the original one in my computer quit. For the first couple of weeks it was great, relatively quick initial connection and pages seemed to load more faster and more smoothly. However, in just the past 24 hours the speaker that lets me hear the modem function has quit with no reason or indication showing in the diagnostics that there was a problem and the initial connection time has slowed down.The troubleshooting information is difficult to follow, I had a lot of problems installing the driver and to be honest there are better, more reliable brands out there that don't cost as much as this one. Very, very disappointed.

After several hours of trying to figure out why my brand new top of the line modem wouldn't work I was told that it had to be a US Robotics V.92 only modem, I looked everywhere but being an older model I had a very difficult time finding one, so I tried a search online and Amazon.com located one for me I was very happy to find a telephone number for the company and they overnighted my modem and it has been producing for me without any faults what so ever!
