no. it's a mainly plastic, except for the parts that have to be metal- like the rod, screws, points, etc. It's an outstanding compass though! I highly recommend it.

How do you secure the extender? No instructions included.

I don't know, and in fact, this was the main reason I would not recommend this product. No instructions! On mine, little pins were loose and I had no idea where they went. Not recommended! Maybe you could call the company. I threw the product away.

Can it hold a prismacolor fine line marker.

This is absolutely hands down the very best compass and it will hold the fine line markers as well as most any in the normal position; however when utilizing the extension you might be limited only by the weight distribution versus size of media used. Also note that being partly plastic the threads will strip if over tightened. Also not with prolonged use the media will loosen up thus causing frustration and could l/t over tightening. Is the compass supposed to be able to be squeezed closed or pulled open without using the center dial?

I think that you should use the center dial rather than pulling open and squeezing it to have it functioning at its best. But to answer your question, it is able to be pulled open or squeezed closed without using the center dial.
