The grip is excellent—comfortable, shock-absorbing, and secure even when wet or muddy. After long days of rockhounding and fossil hunting, it’s noticeably easier on the hands and wrists than cheaper alternatives. I initially wondered if I should’ve gone with a longer version for added leverage, but this size turned out to be more than sufficient. It breaks rock efficiently without feeling unwieldy. Durability is where this pick really earns its reputation. It’s been used hard, left dirty, exposed to moisture, and generally treated like a proper outdoor tool—and it keeps going. The steel holds up exceptionally well, and while surface rust can appear over time (as expected with real steel), a quick cleanup and light oil once in a while keeps it in great shape. The rubber handle, in particular, has aged incredibly well compared to leather handles I’ve seen dry out and deteriorate over the years. That said, this is not a toy—and it deserves respect. I love this thing honestly. I have used it for rock hounding and fossil hunting and its held up the entire time. The grip is very comfortable while the metal has been greatly corrosion resistant even when exposed to water/left in muk and grime for a few days. Overall, I would suggest this to someone even if its costs more- you're getting what you pay for and that is certainly quality.

Bought these for a rock hounding trip. They worked great getting quartz crystals out of rock and hardened mud. Easy to use. Handles have a great grip. The weight is perfect. Very well made. Would buy again.

I'm a real-life geologist. I bought this rock hammer back in 2014 when I was in college, and have somehow managed not to lose it since then. So here's a review after 8 years of use. It's a hammer made of steel, you're taking it outdoors, and you're probably recklessly swinging it at every outcrop in sight. It's going to get rust spots. There was some kind of plastic coating that partially flaked off with use, but I hated the half on/half off situation. So I scraped the rest off. Once a year or so I knock down the rust with steel wool followed by a light oil coating, and that keeps it looking pretty good. WEAR EYE PROTECTION. The warning etched in the handle is not a joke. During one attempt to destroy a particularly disobedient cobble, the edge of the hammer face chipped, and a metal fragment embedded itself in my cheek. I was less than an inch away from serious injury to my eye. Over the years, I've been hit in the face by countless rock fragments and soil particles. When the hammer goes in your bag, it should immediately be followed by a pair of safety glasses. The blue rubber handle has held up very well to the elements. For years, I envied the beautiful leather handled version that my friends, classmates, and colleagues had. But as the years went by, and the dirt and grime accumulated, those leather handles started to dry out and decay (probably because they didn't clean and condition the leather). Now I appreciate my blue handle. It absorbs the shock, stays grippy in the rain, and has lasted for years with no care needed and no signs of slowing down. If I lost this rock hammer, I'd probably cry. It's been on my hip for my entire career! It's sentimental now! And after I calmed down, I'd go get another.

Is it ok to say this Item ROCKS…seriously this has the Estwing tradition all over it. How can you go wrong? This was not made Wong. This is a USA product and the craftsmanship shines. It is every bit of a High Quality Product. Packed in a vacuum sealed bubble wrap, which was a bit of a challenge to open, I am so happy with this Rock Pick that I bought 2, one for me and one for my wife, sort of a self defense tactic. No one else makes them like this. Great grip, nice buff, a truly beautifully product. My only wish would be for a wooden handle, but who knows, maybe some day they will make a commemorative miners pick, not by a hick, but with a hickory handle. Sorry for the puns, just can’t wait to get my rocks off with my pick!

Be aware that this is a smaller rock pick than the standard Estwing 22oz rock pick. You might want to get this size for kids (who have the proper safety training and gear), or if you yourself have a smaller frame, or for storage and/or pack-out-weight reasons, but be aware the full size pick may be better choice because the longer length and weight of the full size pick means more power in your swing, as well as, your hand is a wee bit farther away from the point of impact and any rock chips which may come flying out. That said, it's a Estwing so these things last forever. You're more likely to lose it out in the field than wear it out.

Solid rock pick. The tip is sharp and the weight and balance is just what I wanted. I like the grip, which is good even when it's wet.

Lovely hammer, survived many fossil hunting trips, used for cracking rocks and sifting through mud, without fail. Picked the longer one which is good for reach (and helping to stand up from crouching), but it is quite heavy to carry around. So unless you expect to need the extra oomph from heavier head and longer hammer consider getting the 14oz one.

I've always preferred Estwing for picks, axes, hammers. I like the one piece build - no worries of heads flying off or handles splintering and breaking. The grips are excellent, the weight is good and they sharpen well. They last for years... I have 2 axes I bought about 30 years ago that are still going strong. Just my opinion but they are worth every cent. This pick was ready to use upon arrival.
