Physics for Scientists and Engineers with Modern Physics, Technology Update

I'll first start by saying I am not the type to actually read textbooks chapter by chapter. I typically use textbooks as a reference material. That being said, this book is great. The authors use examples that were fairly intriguing (at least as much as possible - after all, it is still a textbook.) and the problems were thought-provoking without being unnecessarily difficult. I had a good professor who generally did not teach out of the book, but the few items he missed in lecture were readily available in this text. Also, the paperback version (called the International Edition) is identical to the hardcover, and is far cheaper. It's a hefty book, so if not for cost then definitely for transportation I would recommend the paperback. This book also covers multiple semesters, which makes the paperback price that much better considering its multi-term use.

Many decades ago, I worked one summer for Ray Serway. At the time, he told me about how he was working with another to produce a next generation Physics textbook. I only recently discovered that he is on at least his ninth iteration. Comparing it to my textbook in college, there is no comparison. If I had had this textbook then, many of my struggles learning Physics would have been addressed once and for all. I am picture oriented and many of the questions I asked and could not get answers to, are clearly dealt with in this book. I have seen reviews that say it is a hard book, but Physics while intuitive, is not easy. This book to me represents far and away the best text I have seen for presenting Physics in a responsible manner.

Item arrived promptly in excellent condition. Book was brand new. The book is huge being over 1500 pages in length (very heavy). The problems in the Ninth Edition Technology Update are identical to the standard Ninth Edition . If you intend bringing the book to class, you may want to spend more money and buy Volume 1 and 2 separately to save weight. You cannot beat the price for the comprehensive volume. It covers Physics 1, 2, and 3.

I ordered this book as a hard cover New copy. While I am happy with my purchase, this book is not unused. I would said that it is like-new condition, but very well cared for. This like-new condition is the reason for four stars instead of five.

This book was required for a two semester physics class I took in 2015. I think it did a great job making a very difficult subject as understandable as possible. As I am writing this review I am actually reading this book again just for fun.

Okay text. Covers several semesters. Good index and plenty of challenging problems. This is a monstrous text, and would have been better if broken up into three volumes for easier use.

Libro eccellente e mastodontico, completo per una introduzione complessiva alla fisica. A livello universitario è necessario un maggiore approfondimento matematico e formale (soprattutto nella meccanica) ma può rimanere un riferimento sicuro per la comprensione dei fenomeni. Le formule sono sostanzialmente tutte derivate dalle ipotesi evitando "formule date" (eccetto per la fisica moderna che è necessariamente "alleggerita" per privilegiarne la comprensione). Acquisto che sicuramente rifarei!

Excellent book. Gives a fantastic overview of a general physics education.
