IT IS COVERED ALL OVER IN THE SAME FABRIC WHICH SEEMS TO BE NON-SLIP, ALTHOUGH IT WOULD NOT WORK AS WELL ON A POLISHED SURFACE.

why isn't there a movable catch to open it to adjust the angle to suit your needs . Or am I missing something?

I agree, you 're not missing anything, I held my breath every time I 'forced' it open, in fact I no longer completely close it. The storage compartment is pretty useless as storage; it is simply a tray because it doesn't have a lid when the pillow is opened. Another slightly annoying thing is that mine is not square so when my Kindle is on it my eyes tell me it is slanted,, but it is not...I do like the fact the material is 'grabby' and I can put my Kindle high on the open cushion and it doesn't slide down. If it were a few pounds cheaper I would be buying some for Christmas presents. ---- ps, I have kept the receipt as it has a year's guarantee and I am not entirely sure about the life expectancy of the hinges.
