A dark coming-of-age tale where slice-of-life slices back. This is Punpun Onodera’s coming-of-age story. His parents’ marriage is falling apart. His dad goes to jail, and his mom goes to the hospital. He has to live with his loser uncle. He has a crush on a girl who lives in a weird cult. Punpun tries talking with God about his problems, but God is a jerk. Punpun keeps hoping things will get better, but they really, really don’t. Like most kids his age, Punpun is in high school. In fact, he has made it into the best high school in town. He is such a good student. He studies so he doesn’t have to think about his life. Asano introduces some surreal and spiritually-tinged elements here that really set Punpun apart from other manga I've read. The character of Aiko is developed much more in this volume and the dynamic between her and Punpun is emotionally complex in a realistic way. The artwork is consistently stunning — some of the full page spreads are genuinely beautiful. I will note the themes get pretty intense, but that's the whole point of this series. Vol. 3 is a strong entry in the series. The coming-of-age themes get heavier and the storytelling becomes more layered. Asano introduces some surreal and spiritually-tinged elements here that really set Punpun apart from other manga I've read. The character of Aiko is developed much more in this volume and the dynamic between her and Punpun is emotionally complex in a realistic way. The artwork is consistently stunning — some of the full page spreads are genuinely beautiful. I will note the themes get pretty intense, but that's the whole point of this series. Daughter is happy!
My daughter had been asking for this for years now, but I always thought it was too expensive, still is. After searching everywhere for an English version, the resale value is off the wall because it's rare. I went ahead and pulled the trigger and purchased it for her. She was so happy and reads them over and over. Overall, I'm happy with this purchase.

manga volume came sealed in the original plastic
The manga arrived brand new and properly sealed in the original plastic wrap. I was a bit concerned after seeing some reviews mentioning unsealed copies, but mine came in perfect condition with the factory shrink wrap intact. No damage, bends, or issues with the packaging. Ordered June 2026, maybe only the previous batch of this volume came unsealed.
