I was a little bit skeptical to buy these. I am glad I did. The owner of my condo before me didn't clean his washing machine. The downy receptacle was caked with residue and black. It was horrible. My washer and dryer are in a little pantry type room. I noticed a smell every time I walked in. The culprit was the washing machine. I bought these and tried it. They made a big difference. I used one, one week and another the next because it was so gross. I did open the washer as it was washing and saw the water was brown. I'm sure it's not going to get years of dog/cat hair and whatever else out, but it did make my washer smell a lot better. I don't think you will be disappointed. It smells fresher in my laundry room.

Didn't clean as good as we wanted

Seems to work fine, my washing machine smells a little weird even after using, though. It may need an even deeper clean
