Q: can pool grade diatomaceous earth be used in an aquarium diatom filter

Yes, that's what I use it for. Same stuff! Save yourself $100's.diatomaceous earth DOES NOT expand like little sponges. It is a silica skeleton of a tiny animal. The tiny pores in the exoskelton work as very fine filter material.Diatomaceous earth can only mechanically filter your water(polish) It does nothing for organics such as ammonia, nitrite or nitrates.

Q: I had been sold diatomaceous earth some time ago to soak up pet urine from carpeting. is this the product i should order?

For inside your home or for use with livestock use either food grade DE or DE for pest control. FILTER grade DE is an extremely hazardous lung contaminant, It’s a crystalline form of DE which has sharp edges that continuously cut into your lungs, much of the way asbestos fibers do

Q: I want to use this in my aquarium thst has cory cats. I need very fine sand. Is this sand fine?

You do not want to use this as sand this is for filtering purposes only ,use pool filter sand or lowes has a commercial fine sand its like sugar i use it for my geophagus tanks its 6 dollars for a 50 lb bag its really nice stuff or sakrete has a pool filter sand that is nice 15 dollars a bag ,ace hardware has a pool filter sand thats grey very nice ive used them all and there safe for corys

Question 1

is this food grade diatomaceous earth that I can use in my chicken feed?

Accepted Answer

No, this is not food grade DE. This is for filtration use.Food grade diatomaceous earth contains < 2% crystalline silica, whereas swimming pool diatomaceous earth is chemically altered to contain very high quantities of crystalline silica to improve its filtration properties. Although studies do not confirm that eating high-crystalline silica is harmful, breathing it in is significantly more harmful. My recommendation is to use food grade DE for feed.High-crystalline silica or "Pool Grade" DE is important to use in pool filters, but inhaling large amounts or for hours a day can cause severe problems. There is some good additional info on the differences from this DE manufacturer:http://www.redlakeearth.com/faq.htmlReferences:http://npic.orst.edu/factsheets/degen.htmlhttp://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Diatomaceous_earthhttp://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC1740036/
